Sermon landed with the Colts last year and served as the No. 3 back most of the season. He had 173 total yards in 14 games. Sermon has failed to top 200 total yards in any of his three seasons in the NFL. He does average a solid 4.4 yards per carry for his career, though. He will look to move up the depth chart this year and win a top backup job. Sermon is a power back but also has some decent moves in space. He sees the field well. Sermon lacks a little explosiveness, though, and doesn't break a ton of tackles for a man of his size.
FANTASY OUTLOOK: Sermon still has a lot to compete with for playing time. He is not draft material, but could be worth monitoring if he starts finding the field. Sermon might get around 200 total yards and a few scores.

With no clear replacement for Zack Moss after he left in free agency this offseason, the likeliest option to ascend to the No. 2 running back spot behind starter Jonathan Taylor appears to be Indianapolis Colts RB Trey Sermon. His hard running style has earned him the first crack at the job during offseason workouts. Sermon is on his third team in four seasons in the NFL, but this is the closest he's come to establishing some consistency in his career. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry in 2023. Things are looking up for Sermon with training camp on the horizon, but fellow backups Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson will also be factors in the competition this summer and in the preseason. The 25-year-old Sermon had 35 carries for 160 yards last year in Indy and would be a popular waiver-wire pickup in fantasy leagues if Taylor misses more time with an injury in 2024.

Dynasty | Multiple reports are indicating Trey Sermon is likely going to win the backup running back job in Indianapolis. Dynasty Analysis: This isn't the first we've heard of this in June. It seems Sermon may finally be turning a corner in his career and while he likely won't see the field much if the Colts have their way, it looks like he'd be a difference maker should Jonathan Taylor be injured next season. At this point, Sermon looks like a player who should be on dynasty rosters.
Since the Indianapolis Colts didn't address the departure of Zack Moss by taking a running back in this year's NFL draft, the team seems content with Trey Sermon, Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson fighting it out for the backup running back job behind starter Jonathan Taylor in training camp this summer. Of course, the Colts could also add a free agent at the position like Kareem Hunt, but as of right now, Sermon could be poised to be the team's No. 2. Seventeen of Sermon's 35 carries for the Colts last year came in Week 15. In total, the former third-rounder of the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 out of Ohio State had 160 rushing yards and no touchdowns while adding three catches for 13 yards. If Taylor misses time due to an injury again in 2024, the Colts will likely use a committee approach in the backfield.

The Indianapolis Colts re-signed running back Trey Sermon to an undisclosed deal on Thursday. Sermon will return to the Colts in 2024 after carrying the ball 35 times for 160 yards and no touchdowns while catching three passes for 13 yards in 14 games in his first season with the team in 2023. Right now, the 25-year-old former third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 is next in line behind starter Jonathan Taylor after Zack Moss signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency, but it's likely that the Colts will add to the position through either free agency or the upcoming NFL draft. In his three years in the NFL with the Niners, Eagles and Colts, Sermon has averaged 4.4 yards per carry on 78 rushing attempts for 346 yards and only one score in 25 games (two starts).
