Chicago Bears running back Roschon Johnson (foot) was held out of Thursday's practice with a foot injury, according to the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs. It's unfortunate news for the former Texas Longhorn, as he's reportedly been the primary short-yardage and goal-line option throughout camp for Chicago. Backfield mate D'Andre Swift is slated to handle most of the backfield work for the Bears, although it isn't unlikely that head coach Ben Johnson might choose to deploy a similar sort of committee as he did during his time in Detroit. Injuries have limited Johnson throughout his first two seasons, and now he's in danger of missing Sunday's meeting with the visiting Miami Dolphins. Rookie rusher Kyle Monangai and sixth-year pro Travis Homer will see an uptick in snaps if that's the case. Johnson is currently being selected just outside the top 175 in drafts.
From RotoBaller
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) will have a workout on Saturday, and if all goes well, he will return to training camp practice on Monday, according to head coach Sean McVay. The head coach emphasized that if this were a game week, Stafford would be cleared to play. The 37-year-old veteran is dealing with an aggravated disc in his back and received an epidural injection to help with the pain. It's not exactly what you want to hear for a QB heading into the regular season, but the Rams don't seem to be very worried about Stafford's availability for Week 1. Although Stafford could return on Monday, he won't take part in joint practices with the Chargers next week. Stafford showed late last year that he still has what it takes to succeed at a high level, but for fantasy purposes, he's no more than a low-end QB2 that is a big injury risk.
From RotoBaller
ESPN's Ryan McFadden reports that Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer has been a standout in training camp. The Notre Dame product flashed during his rookie campaign, but the addition of Brock Bowers in 2024 was a detriment to Mayer's playing time. While Bowers and new quarterback Geno Smith have quickly gotten on the same page, Mayer has had an excellent camp of his own. The 24-year-old has been an offensive standout since OTAs, per McFadden, who also notes offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has "big plans" for him in 2025. There are undoubtedly targets up for grabs in the Raiders' offense, and Mayer may play a nice role for them. However, that translating to fantasy isn't a guarantee. Bowers and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers are worth rostering for now, but Mayer will have to impress in preseason action before he's worthy of fantasy managers' attention in drafts.
From RotoBaller
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin reports that quarterback Aaron Rodgers, among other veterans, will not play in Saturday's preseason opener against the hosting Jacksonville Jaguars. With rookie signal-caller Will Howard (hand) battling a hand issue, fellow QBs Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are expected to handle the bulk of the reps for the team. However, it's worth mentioning that Howard has yet to be ruled out, per Mark Kaboly of 93.7 The Fan Pittsburgh. Tomlin has noted that he's "comfortable" with what he's seen from his new quarterback, but also remarked that next week "may be different". Rodgers figures to get some playing time in before the start of the regular season, and that could come as soon as next Saturday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to town.
From RotoBaller
The Athletic's Dan Duggan reports that New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton (undisclosed) was on the side with trainers at Thursday's team practice. There's been no news regarding what body part is ailing the veteran. Slayton and other Giants' starters are still waiting on word of whether or not they'll suit up for Saturday's road tilt with the Buffalo Bills, but any time missed would put him in danger of not being able to play in their first preseason game. The fact that there's been no mention of injury is encouraging, but the seventh-year pro is slated to play critical snaps on the outside for the team. Fellow WR Jalin Hyatt should benefit the most in terms of playing time with Slayton sidelined. He's the most likely next man up if the 28-year-old is affected long-term.
From RotoBaller
Per head coach Aaron Glenn, New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields, among other starters, will play in Saturday's preseason matchup against the hosting Green Bay Packers. However, he would not note how much run the first-stringers will get. With a new QB at the helm, it makes sense that Glenn would want to give his starters as much time as possible on the field together as they continue to build chemistry and comfort with each other. It bodes well for the team, regardless of how long they'll be in the game. With his recent toe injury seemingly in the rear-view mirror, this could be an exciting year for the 26-year-old. It remains to be seen how Fields will mesh with his new offensive system. Still, his innate ability as a rusher and the talent of the weaponry surrounding him should keep him in the conversation of a viable fantasy QB1.
From RotoBaller
Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd (groin) was technically listed as not practicing at training camp on Thursday, but ESPN's Rob Demovsky was doing some rehab work for the first time since suffering a groin injury. Lloyd, who played in just one regular-season game in 2024 in his rookie season due to multiple injuries, suffered a non-contact groin injury in late July and hasn't practiced with the rest of the team since. The 24-year-old second-year back most likely won't play in the preseason opener this Saturday against the New York Jets, but the Packers are hopeful he'll be ready for the start of the regular season in early September. Green Bay is still waiting for Lloyd to prove he's worthy of RB2 duties behind starter Josh Jacobs, and so are fantasy managers holding him in dynasty/keeper leagues.
From RotoBaller
Green Bay Packers wide receivers Jayden Reed (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) did not take part in Thursday's training camp practice, according to Packers beat writer Wes Hodkiewicz. Reed has missed time this summer with a toe injury as well, but the foot injury is a new one and bears watching going forward. Wicks, meanwhile, has been managing a calf injury since late July. Neither pass-catcher is likely to suit up for Saturday's preseason opener versus the New York Jets. Reed's injuries don't seem serious, and he was working in two-receiver sets in camp before getting hurt. The 25-year-old was on his way to a huge year in 2024 before seeing his usage tail off late in the year. Still, he's shown a nose for the end zone (14 touchdowns in two years) while being a boom/bust big-play wideout as a WR4/flex in fantasy. Reed could have a bigger role early in 2025 with Christian Watson (knee) out.
From RotoBaller
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur essentially confirmed that quarterback Jordan Love will play in the preseason opener on Saturday against the New York Jets, according to Zach Jacobson of 247 Sports. LaFleur said the team will do their best to give all four QBs meaningful reps in the first preseason game this weekend. Love will probably see a series or two before giving way to Malik Willis, Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma. Even though receiver Christian Watson (knee) could miss half of the season while rehabbing a torn ACL, Love will have plenty of targets in the passing game after the Packers added Matthew Golden in the first round in April. The 26-year-old took a slight step back in 2024 with 3,389 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 15 regular-season starts. Love is a QB2 in fantasy with upside.
From RotoBaller
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love missed two full games last year with a sprained MCL in his knee and parts of two more games with a groin injury. It played a part in Love ranking 34th with 83 rushing yards, according to TruMedia. Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said he'd love for Love to run a little more in 2025. The Athletic's Matt Schneidman writes that Love using his legs more "would unlock another dimension to Green Bay's offense." Love is fully healthy this year after not routinely practicing until around the midway point last year. In 2023, the 26-year-old signal-caller ran 50 times for 247 yards and four touchdowns while playing a full season. Injuries caused Love to take a step back last year, but with better health and more rushing chances, he could easily bounce back as a nice QB2 in fantasy with upside.
From RotoBaller
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey (undisclosed) remains sidelined at training camp practice on Thursday, per Kris Rhim of ESPN. Head coach Jim Harbaugh recently said that McConkey is "working through something minor." Although it doesn't appear to be an injury significant enough to put his Week 1 availability in question, it's unlikely that the 23-year-old second-year wideout will play in the preseason opener on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The former second-rounder (34th overall) last year out of Georgia established himself as quarterback Justin Herbert's go-to wideout in his first year, catching 82 of 112 targets for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 regular-season games (14 starts). Before his injury, he was essentially uncoverable in man-to-man coverage in practices. Barring something unforeseen, McConkey should be a low-end WR1 in fantasy in 2025.
From RotoBaller
Trainers were seen checking on Buffalo Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid's (ankle) lower left ankle during training camp practice on Thursday, according to Nick Sabato of the Niagara Gazette. Kincaid was getting his ankle taped up to test it out. It sounds like Kincaid stayed in at practice, but it's notable since it's on the same side as his knee injury that he dealt with earlier in camp. It's unclear if the Bills will have the 25-year-old play in the preseason opener on Saturday against the New York Giants. If healthy, Kincaid will be looking to bounce back in 2025 after a disappointing 44-448-2 line in 13 regular-season games (nine starts) in 2024. The former first-rounder had 73 catches, 673 yards and two scores as a rookie. The Bills offense spreading things around hasn't helped Kincaid's cause, and Dawson Knox is also still around. Consider him a TE2 with upside in upcoming fantasy drafts.
From RotoBaller
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen won't play in the preseason opener on Saturday against the New York Giants, according to head coach Sean McDermott. Mitchell Trubisky will start for the Bills this weekend and play with the starters for around a quarter. Allen could see a little bit of action in the final two preseason games, but the Bills aren't in a rush to put the three-time Pro Bowler out there in exhibition contests. The 29-year-old is RotoBaller's top QB target in fantasy heading into the 2025 season. He threw for fewer than 4,000 yards in 2024 for the first time since 2019, but he threw 28 touchdowns and only six interceptions while adding 531 rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs in 17 regular-season games. Allen will be a prime MVP candidate and has rushed for an astounding 27 touchdowns in the last two seasons.
From RotoBaller
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the groin injury that has kept wide receiver Rashee Rice (groin) out of training camp practices is minor, and Reid called his absence precautionary. Rice has now missed back-to-back practices this week and will most likely be held out of the preseason opener on Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals, alongside wideout Marquise Brown (ankle). In addition to a minor groin injury, the 25-year-old Rice is facing a potential suspension in 2025 for an off-field incident. He was on pace for a strong second season in the NFL in 2024 before suffering a season-ending torn LCL in Week 4. The suspension hanging over Rice's head this year kills some of his fantasy appeal, but he's still worth a WR3/flex selection in fantasy drafts as one of quarterback Patrick Mahomes' favorite targets when he's available.
From RotoBaller
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown (ankle) remains sidelined at Thursday's training camp practice, according to Chiefs beat writer Matt McMullen. The Chiefs don't consider Brown's ankle injury as anything serious, but he'll almost certainly sit out of the preseason opener this Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals. It doesn't sound like Hollywood's ankle injury is something that would sideline him going into the regular season, but it's definitely concerning for a player that appeared in just two regular-season games in 2024 due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. Brown could have a decent role early in the 2025 campaign if Rashee Rice (groin) is handed down a suspension, but durability concerns have dropped him to a WR59 ranking in fantasy at RotoBaller. The former first-rounder has missed 23 games in the last three seasons due to injuries.
From RotoBaller
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that quarterback Patrick Mahomes will play the first quarter in the team's preseason opener on Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals. The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell would be surprised if Mahomes plays the entire quarter with the starters. The six-time Pro Bowler, two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion finished as the QB12 in fantasy in 2024, his lowest finish in his seven full seasons in the league. Mahomes threw for 3,928 yards, his lowest yardage total in his seven full seasons, while also tossing 26 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in 16 regular-season starts. He came on strong towards the end of the year, but KC's lack of a downfield passing attack really hurt Mahomes. The 29-year-old is now more of a midrange QB1 fantasy target, but he could bounce back with Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown healthy and if the offense can rediscover their downfield explosiveness.
From RotoBaller
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. (illness) is back at training camp practice on Thursday, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN. Thomas returns after sitting out on Wednesday while being under the weather. Head coach Liam Coen said that "everybody" will play in the preseason opener this Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, so Thomas should be on the field. The 22-year-old is a top-10 fantasy wideout going into his second NFL campaign after impressing to the tune of 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns in 17 games (16 starts) as a rookie. The Jags added two-way star Travis Hunter in the first round this year, and he should take over immediately as the WR2 across from Thomas to help draw some attention away from him. In Coen's offense, Thomas could be even more prolific in Year 2.
From RotoBaller
Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet (undisclosed) returned to training camp practice on Thursday after leaving Tuesday's session early with an undisclosed ailment, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Kmet avoided a serious injury earlier this week and should be just fine to play in the Week 1 regular-season opener in early September. However, Chicago could play it safe and hold him out of their preseason opener this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. The 26-year-old former second-rounder's fantasy stock took a big hit when the Bears selected Colston Loveland in the first round this year. Loveland had offseason shoulder surgery but should be ready for Week 1 and could easily take over as the team's primary pass-catching TE in 2025. RotoBaller has Kmet ranked all the way down as the No. 32 tight end this year.
From RotoBaller
New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart will play in the team's preseason opener this Saturday against the Buffalo Bills, according to head coach Brian Daboll. It's unclear how long Dart will play or if starter Russell Wilson will also get some reps in. The G-Men traded back into the first round in the NFL draft in April to select Dart as potentially their QB of the future, but he will most likely start his rookie season as the QB behind Wilson and veteran Jameis Winston. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said that Dart is "continuing to grow and learn every day" during training camp. It's good progress for the Ole Miss product as he enters his first year in the NFL, but for fantasy purposes, he's basically off the radar in single-year leagues with the possibility that he doesn't take any snaps in 2025 if Wilson and Winston both stay healthy and are productive.
From RotoBaller
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said that "everybody" will play in the preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. How long the first-team offense stays on the field is to be determined. Coen also added that rookie first-round two-way star Travis Hunter will play both receiver and cornerback in the game. The 22-year-old Heisman Trophy winner was taken second overall by Jacksonville in April, and the Jags have every intention of keeping Hunter as a two-way player in his first year in the NFL. He has focused more on offense in training camp this summer and should immediately be a starter across from Brian Thomas Jr., but it remains to be seen how involved he'll actually be. Hunter has elite athleticism, but playing both sides of the ball in the NFL isn't going to be easy. He could be a boom/bust WR3/flex target in fantasy.
