2024 RTSports Outlook

Johnston had a disappointing rookie season, topping 55 yards just once all year. He had five games with double-digit fantasy points. Johnston had 38 receptions for 431 yards and two touchdowns. And he got a chance to start much of the year because of various injuries at receiver for the Chargers. Johnston will get a chance to earn a starting job this year with both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams gone. Johnston has a big-time skillset for the position. He has a great blend of speed and size. He can get downfield in a hurry. He also is a huge target because of his size and wingspan. Johnston needs to improve his route running and become more consistent if he hopes to become a top NFL receiver.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Johnston is looking like a boom or bust pick. The potential is there for big things but nothing is certain after his disappointing first season. He is a bit of a wild card. Take him as a reserve fantasy receiver and hope it all comes together for him. He could get around 60 receptions for 700 yards and five touchdowns.

The Los Angeles Chargers passed on drafting a wide receiver with the No. 5 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, which puts second-year wideout and former first-rounder Quentin Johnston in a spot to be the team's No. 1 entering the 2024 campaign. "We believe in it. He's a great kid, he's a great worker. Everyone here has a high opinion of him. I believe he's really going to launch. I really do. His skill set is great. We're gonna work with him, make him better and better," general manager Joe Hortiz said. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams left this offseason, leaving Johnson, who struggled with 38 catches on 67 targets for 431 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL season, with a much larger role in 2024. Johnston is certainly going to have more opportunities to produce for the Chargers and fantasy managers, but the 22-year-old is going to need to gain more separation and clear up his issues with drops.

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston, who disappointed in his first NFL season after being taken in the first-round out of TCU, believes he can break out in his sophomore season under new head coach Jim Harbaugh. Johnston struggled with drops (three) and finished 2023 with only 38 receptions for 431 yards and two touchdowns despite Mike Williams (knee) going down with a season-ending torn ACL early in the year. "I didn't really get a chance to show who I really was and what type of player I am, but I still got the world of confidence in myself even if nobody doesn't," Johnston said. "And so, you know, going into this next season, I can't wait. Like I said, I feel like I'm due for a breakout, so I'm very excited for that." Johnston has time to turn things around and will be worth a late-round fantasy flier now that Harbaugh is in LA.

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston made two catches against the Kansas City Chiefs backups in Week 18 to finally and mercifully end his tough rookie season. Johnston, who was drafted in the first round, ended up making just 38 catches for 431 yards and two touchdowns all year. In Week 18, he turned five targets into two catches for 17 yards. He'll be back for the 2024 season with a whole new coach and (likely) offensive coordinator, so it will be interesting to see if they will be able to turn around one of the biggest busts of the 2023 draft.

Jan 4 5:20pm CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston will look to end his disappointing rookie season on a high note in a Week 18 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnston, the Chargers first-round pick, has just 36 catches for 414 yards and two touchdowns. He'll have a key role with Keenan Allen (heel) likely out and Joshua Palmer (concussion) possibly limited. Johnston doesn't have much upside even against Chiefs backups. He'll be a WR4.

Dec 31 7:20pm CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston made three catches in a Week 17 loss to the Denver Broncos. Johnston was targeted six times and came down with three of them for a total of 29 yards. The first-round rookie was outplayed in the passing game by Alex Erickson and arguably also by Keelan Doss. It's been an awful rookie season for Johnston which will mercifully come to an end next week after a Week 18 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dec 28 5:10pm CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston is set for a possibly large offensive role in a Week 17 game against the Denver Broncos. Johnston is wrapping up a very disappointing rookie season, but with Keenan Allen (heel) and Joshua Palmer (concussion) both questionable at best, the rookie could end up working as the WR1 this week. He hasn't shown much to make him a viable fantasy option in what will be the championship game in most leagues, but deeper leagues might want to use him as a lottery ticket if Allen and Palmer end up missing the game.

Dec 23 11:30pm CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston made just two catches in a Week 16 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Johnston was targeted five times, making just the pair of catches for 29 yards total. He made one relatively big play by his NFL standards, catching a pass for a 21-yard gain. Johnston's disappointing rookie season is mercifully coming to an end soon, but not before the Chargers take on the Broncos next week on New Year's Eve.

Dec 21 3:30pm CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston is not worth a starting spot in most fantasy lineups in a Week 16 game against the Buffalo Bills. Johnston hasn't done much all season, but he's been even more of an afterthought in the passing game when Joshua Palmer is active. With Keenan Allen (heel) out, Johnston might play a slightly bigger role, but that just makes it more likely that he'll drop a critical pass than actually put up big numbers. Johnston should only be rostered in deeper dynasty leagues at this point.

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston scored another touchdown in a Week 15 annihilation by the Las Vegas Raiders. Johnston was targeted three times, making two catches for 23 yards and a score. His touchdown came on a six-yard pass near the end of the game to bring the game within 42 points. Johnston has had a rough rookie season, but he's started to show some signs of life lately, scoring a touchdown in two consecutive games.

Dec 13 10:40am CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston is a risky fantasy option in a Week 15 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Johnston had a big game last week, putting up 91 yards in an ugly Chargers loss. He seemed to be the first read on a lot of plays from new Chargers starting quarterback Easton Stick, but the drop in talent from Justin Herbert (finger) to Stick is a sky dive without a parachute. Johnston could put up WR3 numbers this week, but his upside is so limited in this offense that he's more of a mid-range WR4.

Dec 10 11:30pm CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston had a solid game in a Week 14 loss to the Denver Broncos. He was targeted four times, making three catches for 91 yards, including a huge 57-yard grab on a rare good throw from quarterback Easton Stick. Johnston has been a disappointment most of the season, but this was a flash of what he can do. He's still not really on the fantasy radar, but there's a glimmer of hope at least for those holding onto him in dynasty leagues.

Dec 7 3:30pm CT

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston is coming off one of his best games before a Week 14 matchup against the Denver Broncos. Johnston set career highs last week in three categories with seven targets, five catches, and 52 yards. It wasn't a great performance by any means (eight fantasy points) and he left points on the field with another atrocious drop in a key moment, but it was at least a small sign of progress. Johnston is not worth starting in most fantasy formats at this point, but he's someone to keep an eye on in case all of the talent finally clicks.
