Bowers could have big year one

Using our rules for our money leagues, we came up with a schedule strength ranking for the tight end position. We are using our fantasy defenses report to calculate the rankings. This report can be found in all of our leagues under the "reports" heading. We took the schedule of each team and entered the average number of fantasy points allowed to tight ends last season from all of their opponents to get our fantasy points allowed number. This is a good indication of the tight ends with the most favorable schedules for fantasy scoring for the coming season. Defenses obviously change from year to year, but knowing the tight ends that might have the easiest schedule for fantasy is always a good idea when formulating your rankings and draft strategy.

31. Carolina Panthers 213.66
32. Las Vegas Raiders 213.81

A rookie led fantasy tight ends in scoring last year and the top rated rookie tight end this year gets the easiest fantasy schedule for tight end. Brock Browers and the Raiders have the most favorable schedule for tight ends. Sam LaPorta showed last year that a rookie can make an immediate fantasy impact, so don’t discount Browers to have big-time success in year one. He certainly looks the part of an elite tight end.

Another rookie with a good chance to start has the second easiest schedule for tight ends. Panthers tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders will compete with Tommy Tremble to start, but should emerge and be the top pass-catching tight end. He is looking like a good late-round gamble for fantasy teams.

The Vikings, Packers and Titans round out the top-five most favorable schedules for tight ends. T.J. Hockenson would be looking like a great pick if he wasn’t returning from a major injury. He is no sure thing to play early in the year. But once he is healthy, he could help fantasy teams in a big way once again.

Green Bay is likely to have Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft split a lot of the work at tight end, hurting both their value. They could produce some big games along the way, though, making them decent No. 2 fantasy tight ends this season. Both produced well in an expanded role last year.

Lastly, Chin Okonkwo didn’t quite have the breakout season many hoped last year, but he wasn’t bad by any means. Maybe he gets a few more chances this year and has some bigger games along the way with this favorable schedule. He is another decent tight end to grab as your backup.

The teams that top the list for toughest fantasy tight end schedules are teams that haven’t really utilized the tight end much in recent seasons. The Bengals have the toughest schedule followed bye the Dolphins. Mike Gesicki is the starter for the Bengals, but probably isn’t worth the risk with this schedule and the Bengals recent track record with tight ends.

Miami uses their tight ends to block more than anything in their offense. They have the occasional big game, but Jonnu Smith is going to be a risky weekly fantasy play. He would have looked much better landing with a different team.

There are a couple big-time fantasy tight ends that have unfavorable schedules. Dallas Goedert has the third toughest schedule. Goedert can be a little hit or miss to begin with in this offense, so this schedule gives him a little more concern. You might want to pass on him come draft day and go with another elite tight end with a better schedule and more consistency.

Dalton Schultz is the other elite tight end with a top-five unfavorable schedule. Schultz had a big first season with the Texans, becoming a favorite target of C.J. Stroud. He should get the targets this year. But he has a challenging schedule and more to compete with for targets, so his consistency might be a little off this year compared to last.

We also wanted to look at playoff schedules for fantasy tight ends. So we crunched the numbers of all the schedules from Week 14-17, which is the fantasy playoffs for most leagues. We know you have to get to the playoffs first, but knowing the tight ends with the easiest playoff schedules doesn’t hurt by any means, especially in the big-money contests.

  TE PLAYOFF SOS
1. Atlanta Falcons 175
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 182.37
3. Philadelphia Eagles 184.73
4. Arizona Cardinals 187.67
5. Jacksonville Jaguars 187.77
6. New England Patriots 189.83
7. Miami Dolphins 190.37
8. New Orleans Saints 191.3
9. Los Angeles Rams 192.17
10. Pittsburgh Steelers 192.43
11. Cincinnati Bengals 196.1
12. Detroit Lions 196.12
13. Houston Texans 196.2
14. Indianapolis Colts 198.97
15. Buffalo Bills 199.63
16. Kansas City Chiefs 203.03
17. New York Jets 204.13
18. Carolina Panthers 205.7
19. Baltimore Ravens 205.9
20. Green Bay Packers 207.7
21. Chicago Bears 213.73
22. New York Giants 214.27
23. Seattle Seahawks 214.72
24. Cleveland Browns 214.97
25. Dallas Cowboys 215.8
26. Las Vegas Raiders 219.4
27. Washington Commanders 220.13
28. Denver Broncos 220.8
29. Minnesota Vikings 221.72
30. Tennessee Titans 223.73
31. San Francisco 49ers 225.53
32. Los Angeles Chargers 228.53

The Titans and Vikings are the only two teams with the most favorable fantasy schedule for tight ends during the regular season and playoffs. Hockenson is the intriguing one because he might not be fully healthy until late in the season. So while he might not be a huge fantasy factor for the regular season, Hockenson might be a difference maker in the playoffs.

Okonkwo is looking like a player worth grabbing as a No. 2 fantasy tight end, especially if you have an established starter ahead of him. Okonkwo has a high fantasy ceiling for the coming year because of a schedule that could facilitate a breakout season for him.

The Chargers actually have the best fantasy playoff schedule for tight ends. Donald Parham is the likely starter and has some potential in an offense looking for playmakers in the passing game. This could be his best season to date, making him an intriguing late-round gamble.

George Kittle is the biggest name on the list for top-five favorable fantasy tight end playoff schedules. He is going to produce big and could be even better down the stretch with a schedule setup for success.

The Falcons have the most challenging playoff schedule for fantasy tight ends. This is not good news for Kyle Pitts. He is already a polarizing fantasy player, so this schedule won’t do him any favors to get in good graces with more fantasy owners. Many think he could finally turn things around this year with a new coaching staff in place, but nothing is certain with this situation. Pitts could be a boom or bust pick once again.

The Eagles are the only team on both the top five most difficult fantasy schedules for tight ends for the regular season and playoffs. Goedert is looking like a player you might want to let someone else grab come draft day. There are a lot of good, young options at tight end this year. Going with one of those guys over Goedert might be the play on draft day.

Trey McBride is a favorite for many fantasy owners this year for a breakout season. He had a huge finish to last year and is shooting up draft boards. We wouldn’t avoid him come draft day because he has the fourth toughest fantasy playoff schedule. It is a little bit of a concern, but not a huge red flag for the talented tight end. Maybe just prepare for his numbers to dip a tad during the playoffs.

Hot Plays, Fades and Sleepers: Week 6

Player Notes
Josh Downs Oct 10 12:40pm CT
Josh Downs

Indianapolis Colts wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. (back) and Josh Downs (toe) were both absent from practice on Thursday for the second straight day this week. Pittman could be sidelined multiple weeks with his back injury, so fantasy managers should already be expecting him to miss the Week 6 contest against the division-rival Tennessee Titans this Sunday. Downs' status is a bit less clear, but with two DNPs already this week for him as well, his status is also firmly up in the air for the weekend. Running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) hasn't practiced this week either, so Indy's offense could be missing three of their best playmakers against the Titans. If both Pittman and Downs are unable to play in Week 6, Alec Pierce and rookie Adonai Mitchell would be the Colts' top-two wideouts for either quarterback Anthony Richardson (oblique) or Joe Flacco. Pittman is a candidate for Injured Reserve, which would sideline him at least four games.

Aaron Rodgers Oct 10 12:30pm CT
Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said on Thursday that passing-game coordinator Todd Downing will take over the offensive play-calling from offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett after the organization fired head coach Robert Saleh earlier this week. Instead of also firing Hackett, the Jets instead are demoting him. Downing will have "the full say on the game plan and, ultimately, the plays that are called within the game," according to Ulbrich. Ulbrich also said he will remain the defensive coordinator and will continue to call plays. In 22 games under Hackett (only five full games with quarterback Aaron Rodgers this year), the Jets' offense ranked among the worst in the league, ranking 29th in points per game (16.4) and 30th in total yards per game (273). Rodgers is averaging only 6.0 yards per attempt, the lowest of his career through five games.

Jonathan Taylor Oct 10 12:30pm CT
Jonathan Taylor

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) was not seen at practice for the second straight day this week on Thursday. Taylor suffered a minor high-ankle sprain in the Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and didn't play in the Week 5 loss to the division-rival Jacksonville Jaguars. The fact that he has yet to practice this week doesn't bode well for his chances of returning this Sunday to face the division-rival Tennessee Titans. Backup Trey Sermon (collarbone) also was a DNP on Wednesday but returning to practice on Thursday, putting him in play to make a second straight start in Week 6. The 25-year-old Taylor said he's not dealing with as much pain in his ankle this week, but it doesn't mean he'll play on Sunday. Sermon had 10 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 25 yards in Taylor's absence last weekend, and he'll once again be in play as an RB3/flex in fantasy if he's active and Taylor is not against Tennessee.

Tyler Conklin Oct 10 12:20pm CT
Tyler Conklin

New York Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said that tight end Tyler Conklin (hip) will be limited in the team's first practice of the week on Thursday. Conklin apparently picked up a hip injury in the Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London, where he had six catches on nine targets for 55 yards, his best performance of the season. As long as the 29-year-old doesn't suffer some sort of setback in the next two days, we think he'll be fine to play against the division-rival Buffalo Bills in Week 6 on Monday Night Football. He is coming off his best showing in 2024 and could get more involved in the passing game moving forward with pass-game coordinator Todd Downing taking over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Conklin's fantasy needle is ticking up right now against a vulnerable Bills defense. He'll have plenty of streaming appeal for fantasy managers this week as a low-end TE1.

Travis Etienne Oct 10 12:10pm CT
Travis Etienne

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said that running back Travis Etienne Jr. (shoulder) is still the team's featured running back when he was asked after the Week 5 win over the division-rival Indianapolis Colts if Tank Bigsby will start to see an increase in carries. "No. Travis is our guy. Tank had a good game. That's just the way games go. Happy for Tank. Great for the offensive line, obviously, in some of those situations there. Travis is our guy. Tank had a good game today, though," said Pederson. Over the last few weeks, Bigsby has rushed for 273 yards on 34 carries (8.03 yards per tote) and two touchdowns. He ranks fifth in the NFL with 18 missed tackles forced and first in rushing yards over expectation per attempt. Bigsby has become the team's power back, with Etienne remaining as an elusive, pass-catching back. Etienne's usage has slowed down over the last few weeks, and a nagging shoulder injury could be to blame. The bottom line is that despite Pederson's comments, Bigsby has outperformed Etienne and is deserving of a bigger workload.

Aaron Rodgers Oct 10 12:10pm CT
Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (ankle, hamstring) will be limited in the first practice of the week on Thursday, according to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. He said that Rodgers will be ready to go for the Monday night contest in Week 6 against the visiting division-rival Buffalo Bills. The 40-year-old veteran picked up a low-ankle sprain and a hamstring injury in the Week 5 loss in London to the Minnesota Vikings. Despite Rodgers looking to be in significant pain when he injured his ankle, he didn't miss any snaps in the 23-17 loss. The future Hall of Famer should have an easier go of it against a banged-up Bills secondary this week after two rough performances the last two weeks in losses to the Broncos and Vikings. However, Rodgers is still nothing more than a low-end QB2 option in fantasy, at least until/if the Jets pull off a trade to reunite him with receiver Davante Adams.

Matthew Wright Oct 10 12:40am CT
Matthew Wright

San Francisco 49ers kicker Matthew Wright will look to make a good impression in his 2024 debut in Seattle on Thursday night. Wright was signed early in the week after starting kicker Jake Moody suffered a high ankle sprain on Sunday against the Cardinals. Originally signed out of the University of Central Florida in 2020, Wright has bounced around the league, including multiple stints with Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Carolina, and San Francisco. His most productive year was 2021 with Jacksonville when he played in 14 games. Wright owns a career field goal percentage of 85.1, hitting 40 of 47 attempts. His career-long is 59 yards. While Wright is not as talented as Moody, the biggest factor in choosing a fantasy kicker is the strength of the offense, so for fantasy managers who see San Francisco spending a lot of time in Seahawks territory, Wright is a decent option. That said, there are probably safer bets available in most leagues.

Shaq Lawson

The Carolina Panthers officially signed free-agent DE Shaq Lawson (Bills) to their practice squad on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Charvarius Ward Oct 10 12:20am CT
Charvarius Ward

The San Francisco 49ers D/ST unit is in Seattle in Week 6 to take on the Seahawks for the first of two 2024 matchups. The 49ers contributed nicely to fantasy scores in Week 5 against Arizona, the highlight being a blocked field goal for a touchdown by defensive back Deommodore Lenoir. The touchdown did a lot of salvage work though, as San Francisco only had one sack, one interception, and they allowed 24 points. Seattle's offense has been good, and comes in fully healthy, ranking seventh in the NFL in yards per game and 11th in points scored. The 49ers will be without starting safety Talanoa Hufanga (wrist) and starting cornerback Charvarius Ward (knee) is questionable. Treat the Niners' DST as a startable, but not elite choice in Week 6.

From RotoBaller

David Njoku Oct 10 12:20am CT
David Njoku

Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku (knee, ankle) was absent from practice on Wednesday. The talented tight end finally returned from an ankle injury in Week 5, but within mere minutes, he picked up a new knee injury. Njoku has yet to play a full game this season, and Wednesday's practice status suggests that he could end up being sidelined for Week 6, too. If that's the case, Jordan Akins will step up as the Browns' top tight end, ranking as a mid-to-low TE2 in fantasy football.

From RotoBaller

Mike Gesicki Oct 10 12:00am CT
Mike Gesicki

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki (hamstring) did not practice on Wednesday. As the Bengals prepare for Week 6 against the New York Giants, there's a real chance they could be without their starting veteran tight end. Gesicki has 17 catches and 178 yards this year, but most of that production came over the first three weeks. His role has been drastically scaled back over the last two weeks, and now, it looks like he could be sidelined for Week 6. If so, rookie Erick All Jr., who has 14 catches through his last four games, would jump into the mid-to-low TE2 tier for fantasy football.

From RotoBaller

Will Levis Oct 10 12:00am CT
Will Levis

Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis (right shoulder) was a full participant during practice on Wednesday. The young signal-caller injured himself back in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins, but a conveniently placed Week 5 bye allowed him to get healthy in time for the Titans' upcoming game against Indianapolis. The 25-year-old has been a turnover machine this year, logging six interceptions, three lost fumbles, and just four passing touchdowns so far. He should be avoided in fantasy football, ranking outside the top 24 fantasy quarterbacks.

From RotoBaller

Rashod Bateman Oct 9 11:50pm CT
Rashod Bateman

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman (groin) was sidelined from practice on Wednesday. Bateman is a new addition to the injury report as he was not banged up heading into last Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The 24-year-old has posted modest stats through five games this season, tallying 13 catches, 202 yards, and two touchdowns. So far, he's the overall WR52 in fantasy football and should only be started in leagues with 14 teams or more. Of course, that's contingent on him being healthy. There is a real chance that Bateman's DNP on Wednesday eventually leads to him being inactive against the Washington Commanders in Week 6.

From RotoBaller

Joey Bosa Oct 9 11:40pm CT
Joey Bosa

Los Angeles Chargers running back Gus Edwards (ankle) and defensive end Joey Bosa (hip) were both sidelined during Wednesday's practice. Edwards opened the summer as the favorite to lead Los Angeles' backfield, but he quickly lost his role to J.K. Dobbins. Edwards now has just 113 rushing yards, two receiving yards, and zero touchdowns this year, so even if he makes significant progress and manages to play in Week 6, he'd be off the fantasy radar. Bosa, on the other hand, is off to an impactful start in 2024. The 29-year-old registered seven tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble back in Week 1. However, injuries have sidelined him for almost every snap since then, and he's still banged up on the other side of Los Angeles' Week 6 bye. His status should be closely monitored this week, but he's trending in the wrong direction.

From RotoBaller

Darnell Mooney Oct 9 11:40pm CT
Darnell Mooney

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney (knee) was a limited participant during practice on Wednesday. While seeing the 26-year-old on the injury report in any capacity is not ideal, fantasy managers should find some relief in the fact that he did manage to get on the field for portions of practice to open Week 6. Mooney is coming off a big game in which he caught nine of 16 targets for 105 yards and two touchdowns. While that type of production isn't sustainable given that Kirk Cousins won't eclipse 500 passing yards every week, there's no denying that Mooney's role is growing within the Atlanta offense. He should be treated as a WR3/FLEX option going forward.

From RotoBaller

Justin Herbert Oct 9 11:30pm CT
Justin Herbert

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (ankle) was limited during practice on Wednesday. While a limited status on the first practice of the week isn't anything to panic about, it's a bit unexpected that Herbert is still dealing with his ankle injury on the other side of the Chargers' Week 5 bye. The 26-year-old has been somewhat underwhelming from a fantasy perspective this year, completing 59 of 91 passes for 578 yards, five touchdowns, and two turnovers. As of now, he's trending toward playing against the Denver Broncos in Week 6 and should be treated as a mid-to-low QB2 for the time being.

From RotoBaller

Jauan Jennings Oct 9 11:10pm CT
Jauan Jennings

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings will face the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Thursday night. In Week 5, Jennings fell back into his expected role after a huge fantasy performance in Week 3 as a replacement for an injured Deebo Samuel Sr. and securing the team lead in targets in Week 4. Against Arizona last week, Jennings posted one reception on four targets. On the bright side, three of those targets came while he was in the end zone. As exciting as Jennings has been, it was never realistic to think that Jennings would usurp a healthy Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel Sr., and George Kittle to maintain consistent fantasy relevance. Jennings will probably still mix in a touchdown here and there, but with the whole squad healthy, he should be kept on benches or in the free-agent pool outside of the deepest leagues in Week 6.

From RotoBaller

Deebo Samuel Oct 9 10:50pm CT
Deebo Samuel

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. will try to rebound from a weak performance when the team takes on the Seahawks in Seattle on Thursday night. In Week 5 Samuel Sr. was very quiet, finishing with one catch on three targets for 11 yards. He also took three carries for just nine yards. Samuel Sr. is on a bit of a cold streak. After opening the season with two strong games -- producing 16.2 and 14 half-PPR points -- he missed one game due to a calf injury. In the two games since his return, Samuel Sr. is averaging 34.5 yards per game and no touchdowns while his combined 8 targets are fewer than he garnered in either of the aforementioned productive contests. Seattle will be missing a few pieces on defense, most notably starting CB Riq Woolen (ankle), but they have given up the 10th-fewest points to opposing fantasy receivers in Yahoo default scoring. Samuel Sr. will be in the thick of the WR2 landscape when he laces up on Thursday night.

From RotoBaller

Brandon Aiyuk Oct 9 10:20pm CT
Brandon Aiyuk

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will look to maintain momentum in Seattle where the team faces the Seahawks on Thursday. After four consecutive sub-par performances, Aiyuk finally broke out in Week 5 at home against Arizona by snagging eight of 12 targets for 147 yards. Seattle has been relatively stingy this year against opposing wide receivers in fantasy, ranking 10th-toughest in the league, however, the Seahawks' defense is banged up this week with starters ruled out and three more contributors questionable. Most importantly for Aiyuk, they'll be without starting CB Riq Woolen (ankle). Aiyuk will look for his first touchdown of the season as he checks in as a back-end WR1 in Week 6.

From RotoBaller

Jordan Mason Oct 9 9:30pm CT
Jordan Mason

San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason is in Seattle for a Week 6 matchup against the Seahawks on Thursday night. Last week, Mason disappointed as an RB1 by compiling 89 yards on 14 carries, no touchdowns, one reception for nine yards, and a catastrophic fourth-quarter red-zone fumble. He comes into this matchup as the RB5 overall in Yahoo default points per game. Seattle has been middle-of-the-road in stopping opposing running backs, allowing 20.3 PPG -- most recently allowing 133 yards to New York Giants backs Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Eric Gray. 49ers rookie running back Isaac Guerendo matched his modest season-high five carries last week versus Arizona, which preserves Mason's bell cow status but this might be the week that Guerendo gets more involved given the short turnaround of a Thursday game after Mason's season-long heavy workload. Nevertheless, Mason remains a high-end RB1 in this one.
