Veteran DE Jerry Hughes re-signs with Texans

Mon Jul 8 8:16pm ET
Field Level Media

Jerry Hughes re-signed with the Houston Texans on Monday, setting him up for a 15th season in the NFL.

A Houston-area native, Hughes spent the past two seasons with the Texans. The defensive end turns 36 in August.

Hughes played all 17 regular-season games in each of his two campaigns with Houston but started just two games in 2023. He had three sacks, one forced fumble and 32 tackles last season after a nine-sack campaign in 2022.

Hughes has compiled 70 sacks, 19 forced fumbles, five recoveries, two interceptions and 479 tackles in 218 career games (152 starts) with the Indianapolis Colts (2010-12), Buffalo Bills (2013-21) and Texans.

Brandon Aubrey Aug 11 9:10pm CT
Brandon Aubrey

Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey picked up where he left off last season in the first Cowboys preseason game, kicking four field goals in five tries. Aubrey's made kicks came from 30, 36, 38, and 52 yards out, while his miss was from 65. Aubrey was the top scoring kicker in most fantasy formats last season, and even in fantasy football's most volatile position, there's no reason to think he won't be at least top-five again this year.

Jalen Brooks Aug 11 9:00pm CT
Jalen Brooks

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Brooks made a big catch in Sunday's preseason game loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Brooks was targeted twice, making both catches for 49 yards. One of his catches was the biggest play of the game for Dallas, a 43-yard completion tossed from quarterback Cooper Rush. Brooks played in seven games last season, making six catches on six targets, mostly playing on special teams. He's coming into the season fourth at best on the wide receiver depth chart, but has some upside possible for patient fantasy managers/

Malik Davis Aug 11 8:50pm CT
Malik Davis

Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis led the Cowboys backfield in carries and yards in a preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Davis ran the ball eight times, gaining 18 yards, with a long of just four. The rest of the Cowboys backfield combined for just nine carries, so Davis had his chances in this one, but didn't do a ton with them. He was also targeted five times in the passing game, catching two passes for 20 yards. The second-year running back will be third at best on the depth chart, well behind Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle, and likely behind Royce Freeman as well.

Dak Prescott Aug 11 8:40pm CT
Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (ankle) expects to practice when the team returns to the field on Tuesday, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. The veteran quarterback clarified that his ankle is "fine" even though soreness held him out of Dallas' preseason opener. Given that Prescott will practice on Tuesday, fantasy managers can let out a sigh of relief knowing that the Dallas quarterback avoided a serious injury. He remains on track to start for Dallas in Week 1, ranking as a low-end QB1 option in most redraft leagues.

Spencer Rattler Aug 11 8:40pm CT
Spencer Rattler

New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler (thigh) missed practice on Sunday, according to NFL insider Nick Underhill. The rookie signal-caller reportedly suffered a slight thigh bruise, but he received treatment on Sunday and is expected to return for the Saints' next practice. One would have to imagine that Rattler suffered the injury during the Saints' preseason game on Saturday. The fact that he expects to return for the team's next practice is a good sign given that he's locked into a serious competition with Jake Haener for the backup quarterback role. Rattler and Haener will continue to showcase themselves through the remainder of training camp and the preseason.

Trey Lance Aug 11 8:40pm CT
Trey Lance

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance played most of the Cowboys preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Lance attempted 41 passes, completing 25 of them for 188 yards. He did not throw a touchdown but also did not turn the ball over. He did take three sacks, losing 16 yards. On the ground, he rushed six times for 44 yards, including a long of 19. Lance wasn't particularly impressive in this one, but he will continue to battle with Cooper Rush for the Cowboys backup job behind starter Dak Prescott.

Joe Mixon Aug 11 8:40pm CT
Joe Mixon

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon (quad) returned to practice on Sunday following a multi-week absence, according to a video from Aaron Wilson of KPRC2. Acquired from the Cincinnati Bengals during the offseason, Mixon now appears to be 100 percent and on track to lead the Houston backfield when the NFL season kicks off in a few weeks. Dameon Pierce may push to earn some touches in 2024, but Mixon, who tallied 1,410 scrimmage yards and 12 touchdowns last year, is their lead back and should be valued accordingly. He's a fringe top-12 running back in redraft fantasy football leagues.

Rasheen Ali Aug 11 8:20pm CT
Rasheen Ali

Baltimore Ravens running back Rasheen Ali (undisclosed) sustained a stinger partway through Friday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to Brian Wacker of the Baltimore Sun. As a result, he was absent from practice on Sunday. Ali rushed a whopping 10 times in the contest but was held to just 26 yards on the ground. He should make the 53-man roster with Keaton Mitchell (knee) on the PUP list, but he'll need a strong camp and start to the season in order to gain a firm hold on his role within the Ravens' offense. For the time being, he fills a depth spot and can be avoided in most redraft leagues.

Antonio Pierce Aug 11 8:10pm CT
Antonio Pierce

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce expects to name his starting quarterback for Week 1 after the conclusion of next Saturday's preseason contest against the Dallas Cowboys, according to Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com. The competition is between incumbent starter Aidan O'Connell and free agent acquisition Gardner Minshew II, and it's possible that Pierce won't make up his mind on a starter until each quarterback plays at least one quarter next weekend. The Raiders aren't expected to have a terrific offense this year, but both O'Connell and Minshew have previously shown that they're capable of supporting fantasy-relevant production from their playmakers.

Miller Forristall Aug 11 8:00pm CT
Miller Forristall

Los Angeles Rams tight end Miller Forristall hauled in three passes for 20 yards and a touchdown on three targets in Sunday's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. He caught the game-winning TD pass from Stetson Bennett late in the game as the Rams won 13-12. Forristall, a 26-year-old Alabama product, was the leading Rams tight end in the preseason contest on Sunday. As Tyler Higbee works back from a torn ACL, Forristall is behind Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen on the current unofficial depth chart. This performance should help him but he still has work to do to earn regular season reps.

Jordan Whittington Aug 11 7:50pm CT
Jordan Whittington

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Jordan Whittington caught six passes for 74 yards on nine targets to lead Rams pass catchers in Sunday's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. Whittington averaged 12.3 yards per reception and caught a long pass of 30 yards in the contest. A sixth-round pick out of Texas, Whittington was impressive in his debut for Los Angeles. After the game, Rams head coach Sean McVay said of Whittington: "He's going to be a factor for us". This is a name to monitor in the preseason for the Rams offense.

Boston Scott Aug 11 7:40pm CT
Boston Scott

Los Angeles Rams running back Boston Scott earned the start in Sunday's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys. Scott carried 15 times for 68 yards as he led the Rams' backfield in touches. He also caught all three of his targets for 10 receiving yards. Scott will be working behind Kyren Williams and Blake Corum most likely this season but got some nice run in the preseason game. He can be an effective producer when given touches but those could be hard to come by this season with the talented running-back duo ahead of him on the depth chart.

From RotoBaller

Zach Evans Aug 11 7:40pm CT
Zach Evans

Los Angeles Rams running back Zach Evans got 12 carries in Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys but he totaled only 28 yards. Evans averaged just 2.3 yards per carry in this game as he struggled to get going. He spelled Boston Scott on Sunday as the second running back. He did haul in one target for 24 receiving yards. Evans will struggle to get carries this season in a loaded backfield featuring Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, and Boston Scott.

Stetson Bennett Aug 11 7:30pm CT
Stetson Bennett

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett drew the start in the team's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys and played the whole contest. Bennett was 24-of-38 for 224 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions. The turnovers are a huge issue as Bennett competes for the backup role behind Matthew Stafford. Bennett missed all of last season addressing mental health issues so competing in a full preseason game is a nice step forward. He will have to sharpen his game and limit the turnovers as the regular season approaches.

Marquez Callaway Aug 11 5:40pm CT
Marquez Callaway

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marquez Callaway has been released by the organization on Sunday. That didn't last long for Callaway as he was added to the roster in the beginning of the month. He has now been cut in order to make room for wide receiver Shaquan Davis on the 90-man roster. Callaway did play in the preseason opener, but he didn't do any noteworthy in the win. Possibly, Callaway is able to catch on with another organization before the season begins.

Eddy Pineiro Aug 11 5:30pm CT
Eddy Pineiro

Carolina Panthers kicker Eddy Pineiro appears to have won the starting kicker job heading into the regular season. The organization has waived undrafted free agent Harrison Mervis on Sunday. That leaves Pineiro as the only kicker on the roster, which means he should be the starter heading into the season. Last season, Pineiro connected on 25-of-29 field goal attempts while hitting 17-of-20 PATs in 15 games. He is in the final year of a two-year deal, so we'll see if he improves in 2024 and earns himself a new deal.

Kyle Hamilton Aug 11 5:20pm CT
Kyle Hamilton

Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton (leg) was forced to exit early during practice on Sunday. The young safety suffered a leg injury, but head coach John Harbaugh said that Hamilton looks stable. The assumption is that the team will run tests to determine the severity of the issue. The hope is that this is a minor injury as Hamilton has been a big part of the Ravens defense.

From RotoBaller

Rashod Bateman Aug 11 5:20pm CT
Rashod Bateman

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman is expected to be back on the practice field soon, according to head coach John Harbaugh. Bateman appeared to have suffered an upper body injury during practice last Monday. Harbaugh said the issue isn't serious, but Bateman sat out of the preseason opener anyway. The Ravens are likely just being cautious with young wideout who missed 12 games in 2022. He hauled in 32 receptions for 367 yards and one touchdown in 16 games last season. We'll see if he's able to build upon that heading into 2024.

Courtland Sutton Aug 11 4:10pm CT
Courtland Sutton

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton led the team with 35 receiving yards on two catches (three targets) in the team's 34-30 win over the hosting Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday in the preseason opener. Sutton had a catch apiece from quarterback Jarrett Stidham and rookie first-rounder Bo Nix. Coming off a career-best 10-touchdown season in 2023, Sutton is Denver's clear No. 1 wideout, especially with Jerry Jeudy no longer in town. The 28-year-old former second-round pick in 2018 out of SMU shouldn't lack for target volume in 2024, but he's due some serious touchdown regression and will be at the mercy of how efficient the Broncos' offense is under either Stidham or the rookie Nix. Sutton will have more fantasy upside as a WR4/flex if Nix is able to win the starting gig under center to begin the regular season.

From RotoBaller

Audric Estime Aug 11 4:10pm CT
Audric Estime

Denver Broncos rookie running back Audric Estime's got the most work of any of the team's RBs in the preseason opener on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium against the hosting Indianapolis Colts. Estime led the backfield with 10 carries for 31 yards and a touchdowns while also catching all three of his targets for 13 yards in the passing game. The 20-year-old also lost a fumble, but he currently appears to be Denver's RB3 ahead of veteran Samaje Perine, who didn't see a single carry and dropped his only target, which led to an interception, despite being the fourth RB in the game behind Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and Perine. The fifth-rounder should be part of Denver's opening-day roster and is probably the biggest threat to Williams' early-down touches in 2024. However, it will probably take an injury to Williams for Estime to be worth rostering in standard-sized fantasy leagues.
