Not Purdy: 49ers hit Green Bay with backup QB, no Nick Bosa

Wed Nov 20 6:45pm ET
Field Level Media

Quarterback Brock Purdy and defensive end Nick Bosa are not available for the San Francisco 49ers as they enter Green Bay with designs on finding their finishing kick on Sunday afternoon.

Purdy is out with a right shoulder injury and won't leave the sideline at Lambeau Field, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. Shanahan also declared Bosa out and confirmed journeyman Brandon Allen would make his 10th career start at quarterback.

"Outside of here people haven't seen a lot of Brandon. But it's his second year (with the 49ers)," Shanahan said. "Obviously guys want Brock up, but guys are excited to see Brandon play."

Shanahan said the 49ers are "a little surprised" Purdy experienced tightness and discomfort in his shoulder after an MRI exam on Monday that showed no long-term cause for concern.

"The way it responded this week, it's really up in the air for next week," Shanahan said of Purdy's long-term prognosis.

Allen's most recent NFL start on the road was with the Cincinnati Bengals at the Baltimore Ravens in 2020. Allen completed 6 of 21 passes for 48 yards with two interceptions. He finished with a passer rating of 0.0 in a 38-3 loss.

"It's definitely an opportunity for me to go out and play well and put our guys in a good position to win the game," Allen said Friday. "And obviously we want Brock back and healthy and all that, but for time being, it is an opportunity for me."

Purdy took the practice field Thursday with the intent to participate. His shoulder tightened significantly, and the 49ers ushered him off the field to meet with trainers.

Purdy beat the Packers in the NFC divisional playoffs at San Francisco in January, but Allen is familiar to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

LaFleur was an assistant coach with the Rams during Allen's two-year run in Los Angeles. Allen broke into the NFL in 2016 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and is 2-7 in nine career starts. He went 1-2 with the Denver Broncos in 2019 and 1-5 in six starts over two years with the Bengals in 2020 and ‘21.

A victory against the visiting 49ers on Sunday would bolster the Packers' playoff chances, send a conference rival below .500 and avenge a bitter playoff defeat.

Those seemingly rank in no particular order for the Packers (8-3), although they don't shy from living at least partially in the past ahead of a Week 12 showdown.

San Francisco eliminated Green Bay 24-21 in the NFC divisional playoffs last season, scoring 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

"That's what you've got to sit with all offseason, is going back, watching the game, trying to see what you could have done better," Packers quarterback Jordan Love said. "What you could have done differently in that game. ... Just knowing that's the team that knocked us out, we're definitely hungry for this game."

Ditto for San Francisco. The 49ers fell to 5-5 after last week's 20-17 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks, done in by Geno Smith's 13-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds to play.

Still only a game behind NFC West-leading Arizona, the reigning conference champion 49ers are just 1-3 in division play and can ill afford to lose more ground.

A visit to the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills awaits after the trip to Green Bay.

While they're dealing with plenty of not-so-good news on the injury front, the 49ers do anticipate the return of George Kittle. The tight end does not carry an injury designation and is eager to play after a nagging hamstring injury sidelined him against the Seahawks.

"Very excited," Kittle said. "Can't pass up playing the Packers, so no, I will be out there for sure."

While Kittle likely will play on Sunday, cornerback Charvarius Ward has been ruled out and will miss his third game following the death of his 1-year-old daughter. Linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee), defensive lineman Kevin Givens (groin) and wide receiver Jacob Cowing (concussion) also have been ruled out, while offensive tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and offensive lineman Jon Feliciano (knee) is questionable.

As for the Packers, cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring) have been ruled out and defensive end Colby Wooden (shoulder) is questionable for Sunday's game.

Allen was a three-year starter at Arkansas but has been a journeyman backup since entering the NFL in 2016 as the 201st overall pick of the Jaguars.

Shanahan and LaFleur have been fierce competitors since twice working together, first as low-level assistants with the Houston Texans in 2008, then on the so-called "dream team" staff in Washington that also included Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel and Raheem Morris; and two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons (2015, 2016) where LaFleur was quarterbacks coach and Shanahan called the plays.

Shanahan scored the most recent win over LaFleur in January. Green Bay has won seven of the past eight regular-season meetings between the franchises.

But the familiarity and shared-brain approach to offense that has the coaches completed each other's play calls has led to some tight games. The past three at Lambeau Field were all decided by three points.

Green Bay, which hosts a home game on Thanksgiving next Thursday, is starting a run of three games in 12 days. They'll play back-to-back Thursday games. Their Week 14 game is at Detroit.

That might make it good news for LaFleur that surprising contributors have emerged of late.

Packers wideout Christian Watson had a career-best 150 receiving yards on only four catches during last week's 20-19 road win against the Chicago Bears. His diving 60-yard reception in the fourth quarter put the Packers in position for Love's go-ahead, 1-yard scoring run with 2:59 to play.

Watson entered the game with eight catches for 83 yards over his previous three contests, but LaFleur assured Watson remains a "big part" of the attack.

"He's a guy who's got every measurable known to man in terms of the size, the speed, and it's not like those were easy plays he was making," LaFleur said. "He was making tough, contested catches."

San Francisco will aim to generate more pressure against Love than the Bears, who sacked him just once. The 49ers collected four sacks against the Seahawks, with Bosa and Leonard Floyd contributing 1.5 apiece.

Recent regular-season history between the Packers and 49ers at Lambeau Field has favored Green Bay.

The Packers have won seven of their past eight home games against the 49ers and are 22-11 versus San Francisco at home all-time. Green Bay leads the series 34-28-1.

Bender's DFS Pickem Plays: Week 12

Player Notes
Dare Ogunbowale Nov 24 12:30am CT
Dare Ogunbowale

Houston Texans running back Dare Ogunbowale hasn't done much to benefit fantasy managers during the 2024-25 campaign. With Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce both missing time this season due to injury, Ogunbowale had a chance to get involved, even if it was only for a game or two. Yet, that didn't happen, with the 30-year-old amassing only 25 carries for 68 yards this season. To be fair, he did have a receiving touchdown in the Week 4 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Still, outside of that, Ogunbowale has been non-existent from a fantasy standpoint. Keep him out of the starting line in Week 12 versus the Titans.

Adam Trautman Nov 24 12:20am CT
Adam Trautman

Denver Broncos tight end Adam Trautman currently sits atop the depth chart. However, that hasn't meant much, with the 27-year-old amassing only eight catches for 156 yards and a touchdown this season. Granted, Bo Nix had his share of struggles early on in the 2024-25 campaign. But with Nix turning it around over the last few months, most anticipated Trautman would be at least a little more productive. With that in mind, Trautman may make a few more trips to the end zone before the end of the regular season. Still, unless he shows he'll be involved consistently, he has no business being in any fantasy lineup for Week 12 versus the Las Vegas Raiders.

Mecole Hardman Nov 24 12:10am CT
Mecole Hardman

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. caught the pass from Patrick Mahomes that resulted in his team defeating the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old hasn't been relevant since then, catching only 12 passes for 90 yards during the 2024-25 campaign. With the number of injuries on the roster this season, most assumed Hardman would have a chance to get more involved. However, that hasn't happened. Of course, he's been known to have some impressive fantasy showings over the years. Still, outside of his contributions as a member of the special teams unit, Hardman likely won't see much work in Week 12 versus the Carolina Panthers.

From RotoBaller

Luke McCaffrey Nov 24 12:00am CT
Luke McCaffrey

Washington Commanders wide receiver Luke McCaffrey hasn't had a productive inaugural year. In 11 appearances this season, the 2024 No. 100 overall pick has only 13 catches for 134 yards. Without a doubt, production like that won't earn him a spot in any fantasy lineup in Week 12 versus the Dallas Cowboys. But McCaffrey may get a chance to show his stuff, so he's worth stashing in dynasty formats in case he shows signs of life in the years ahead.

Olamide Zaccheaus Nov 23 11:50pm CT
Olamide Zaccheaus

Washington Commanders wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus has been quiet in his first season with the team. After a few productive outings while with the Atlanta Falcons, the 27-year-old has barely been involved in 2024-25, catching only 23 passes (34 targets) for 242 yards. In all fairness, Jayden Daniels is capable of making big gains using his legs. Terry McLaurin, Brian Robinson Jr., and Austin Ekeler also command a certain amount of attention whenever they step on the field. As a result, Zaccheaus doesn't have a place in fantasy lineups for Week 12 versus the Dallas Cowboys. That's not expected to change anytime soon unless someone goes down with an injury.

Mike Evans Nov 23 11:40pm CT
Mike Evans

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans (hamstring) is expected to suit up for Sunday's meeting with the New York Giants. The wideout has battled a hamstring injury, keeping him off the field for the Bucs' previous three contests. Tampa could certainly use him, with the team dropping four-straight games heading into Week 12. But help is likely on the way in the form of Evans, who had 26 catches for 335 yards and six touchdowns before going on the shelf. Without question, fantasy managers can get him back in the starting lineup despite the concern of a lightened workload. Evans' return should also have a positive impact on Baker Mayfield. On the other hand, his presence may not be good news for Cade Otton, who had 30 catches and three touchdowns in his last four appearances.

D'Andre Swift Nov 23 9:30pm CT
D'Andre Swift

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Chicago Bears running back D'Andre Swift (groin) intends to play this Sunday despite being deemed questionable due to a groin injury. The 25-year-old picked up the injury in last weekend's 20-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He'd kick off the week of practice tagged with a DNP but was able to log a full session on Friday and garners a questionable tag heading into their divisional matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota has been a staunch test for opposing running backs this season -- allowing the fewest rushing yards and second-fewest yards per carry in the NFL (3.6). Additionally, the Vikings are letting up just 10.4 fantasy points to the position per contest, behind just the Kansas City Chiefs for the least in the league. It's good news that Swift should suit up, but fantasy managers will want to temper expectations against one of the league's top defensive rushing units. He's RotoBaller's PPR RB19 for this weekend's slate of action.

Will Dissly Nov 23 9:10pm CT
Will Dissly

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Will Dissly is set for a strong performance in a Week 12 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Dissly has been the overall fantasy TE15 since Week 6, and has finished in the TE1 rankings twice in that span. He's coming off an overall TE5 finish last week, and could see even more targets thrown his way with Hayden Hurst (hip) ruled out. The Ravens defense has been very kind to opposing tight ends, allowing the fourth-most receiving yards per game to the position. Dissly had been piling on the targets and catches lately, and in Week 11 he came up with his first touchdown of the season. Another one is far from unlikely in Week 12, making him a lower-end TE1 option with some upside in what should be a high-scoring contest.

From RotoBaller

Antonio Gibson Nov 23 9:10pm CT
Antonio Gibson

New England Patriots running back Antonio Gibson can be left out of fantasy lineups in Week 12 when his team takes on the Miami Dolphins on the road. The 26-year-old had a solid role in New England's passing game for a few weeks earlier this season, but his snap totals have dwindled since then while backfield mate Rhamondre Stevenson gobbles up a large majority of the RB touches. The Dolphins have been a strong matchup for opposing running backs, averaging 18.6 fantasy points allowed per game to the position. Still, fantasy managers can safely avoid Gibson until his involvement in New England's offense drastically increases. He's RotoBaller's PPR RB45 in this week's rankings.

From RotoBaller

Cameron Dicker Nov 23 9:10pm CT
Cameron Dicker

Los Angeles Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker should have another strong performance in a Week 12 game against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Dicker is coming off a strong performance in Week 11 where he ended up as the overall K3 for the week. He's been a top-15 fantasy kicker each week but one since Week 5, and should once again land in that range in what could be a high-scoring game. Dicker is one of the safer fantasy kickers this season, and he has nice upside most weeks as well.

From RotoBaller

Odell Beckham Jr. Nov 23 9:00pm CT
Odell Beckham Jr.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. should not be in fantasy lineups in Week 12 when he faces the New England Patriots at home. The LSU product has seen his snap totals rise over the previous three weeks, and his involvement in Miami's pass attack has correlated. Still, he's yet to clear 17 receiving yards or 4.5 fantasy points in any outing. Moreover, tight end Jonnu Smith has evolved into a reliable second option in the Dolphins offense behind speedster Tyreek Hill, and running back De'Von Achane remains heavily involved in the team's passing game. Despite an excellent matchup against a porous Patriots pass defense, Beckham Jr. will be tough to trust as little more than a lowly WR7. The former fantasy stalwart ranks as RotoBaller's PPR WR77 in Week 12's rankings.

From RotoBaller

Quentin Johnston Nov 23 8:50pm CT
Quentin Johnston

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston has plenty of upside in a Week 12 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Johnston set a new season-high last week with eight targets, tying him for the team lead with Ladd McConkey. McConkey is questionable with a shoulder injury, and while he seems likely to play, Johnston would have even more upside if his fellow wide out were forced to miss the game. Johnston, who plays the perimeter role on the Chargers offense, could have a huge game since the Ravens secondary has allowed the most fantasy points and receiving yards to outside wide receivers. He's a fairly safe WR3 with a lot more upside than most of the guys ranked around him.

From RotoBaller

Josh Palmer Nov 23 8:50pm CT
Josh Palmer

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer is not a good fantasy option in Week 12 lineups despite a great matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Palmer put up a WR2 performance in Week 9 but has otherwise been outside of the top 24 fantasy wide receivers every week this season. The Ravens secondary struggles mightily against wide receivers (they've allowed the most fantasy points and the most yards to outside pass catchers), but Palmer just isn't involved enough in the passing game to be anything more than a touchdown-dependent dart throw in deep leagues.

From RotoBaller

J.K. Dobbins Nov 23 8:40pm CT
J.K. Dobbins

Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins has a tough matchup in a Week 12 Monday Night Football contest against the Baltimore Ravens. While Dobbins ranks in the top-15 in running back fantasy points, snap share, and carries, the Ravens defense has been elite against the run and awful against the pass. In the running game, the Ravens defensive unit is top-five in almost every important metric, so Dobbins is unlikely to rack up tons of yards. In what could be a high-scoring game though, there's a chance he'll find the end zone and still put up an RB2 performance. His floor is a bit lower than usual this week, however.

From RotoBaller

Justin Tucker Nov 23 8:40pm CT
Justin Tucker

Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker is in the midst of the least efficient season of his career. He's made just 72.7% of his field goal attempts and has gone 3-for-7 from 50 yards or further. In Week 11, he missed two of his three attempts which ended up being the difference between a win and a loss. Now, he sets his sights on the matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 12. The Bolts allow the second-fewest fantasy points per contest to kickers at 5.6. That, combined with Tucker's struggles, means there are better options this week.

From RotoBaller

Gus Edwards Nov 23 8:40pm CT
Gus Edwards

Los Angeles Chargers running back Gus Edwards is not a strong starting option in Week 12's Monday Night Football matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Edwards will face off against his former team, but he comes into the game as the clear backup to starter J.K. Dobbins. Since coming off injured reserve, Edwards has seen a 25% and 16% snap share, totaling 16 carries for 82 yards without any passing game targets. Edwards remains an important part of the Chargers offense, but it hasn't and likely won't translate to fantasy value, especially this week against an elite Ravens run defense.

From RotoBaller

Kenneth Gainwell Nov 23 8:40pm CT
Kenneth Gainwell

Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell will not be in play when his team squares off against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. The 25-year-old has settled into a nice role this season, backing up his superstar teammate Saquon Barkley. Since Week 7, Gainwell is averaging 6.8 rush attempts, 31.4 yards on the ground, and one target in his appearances. He's been a solid change-of-pace option for the Eagles but holds little standalone value for fantasy managers outside of his obvious handcuff appeal. While his snap-share is decent, he has yet to score double-digit fantasy points or a touchdown in 2024. For now, he can be stashed in case Barkley is forced to miss time but is better off being left out of fantasy lineups. Gainwell is RotoBaller's PPR RB43 in this week's ranks.

From RotoBaller

Mark Andrews Nov 23 8:30pm CT
Mark Andrews

Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is back to sharing time with Isaiah Likely, who is a bigger hurdle for his fantasy week than the opponent. In Week 11, he saw 61% of the offensive snaps compared to 87% the week before when Likely was sidelined. Andrews has become a touchdown-or-bust option whenever the offense is healthy. To make matters worse, the Los Angeles Chargers only allow 7.9 fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends in half-PPR leagues. This leaves Andrews as more of a TE2 at best.

From RotoBaller

Michael Wilson Nov 23 8:30pm CT
Michael Wilson

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson should seldom be started this weekend when his team lines up against the Seattle Seahawks in a road tilt. The Stanford alum is a strong route-runner and currently leads his fellow wideouts in snaps. However, that is mainly due to teammate Marvin Harrison Jr. missing most of one game after sustaining a concussion. While Wilson has had a few viable fantasy performances this year, they've typically only taken place when he's gotten into the end zone. The Seahawks present as a middle-of-the-road matchup regarding their pass defense, so it's not exactly one to shy away from. Still, the 24-year-old is averaging just three receptions and 30.7 yards over his ten contests, so fantasy managers can likely find a better option to slot in his place. Wilson ranks as RotoBaller's PPR WR53 for this weekend's slate of action.

From RotoBaller

Justice Hill Nov 23 8:30pm CT
Justice Hill

Baltimore Ravens running back Justice Hill isn't carrying an injury designation heading into Week 12, so it looks like he was cleared from his concussion. With that being said, the 27-year-old hasn't been very relevant in fantasy leagues this season. Hill has registered two double-digit performances in half-PPR formats, which are his only two weeks as an RB2 or higher. His Week 12 opponent, the Los Angeles Chargers, happens to allow the third-fewest fantasy points per game to opposing backfields. Fantasy managers will want to look elsewhere for a running back this week.
