Week 16 TNF: Broncos-Chargers Preview, Props & Prediction

Thu Dec 19 2:26pm ET
Field Level Media

On a season-best four-game winning streak, the Denver Broncos enter a battle for playoff seeding holding the upper hand when they face the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night in Inglewood, Calif.

The Broncos (9-5) last reached the playoffs in 2015, when they won the Super Bowl behind quarterback Peyton Manning. Rookie QB Bo Nix has brought hopes of a brighter future, guiding Denver from a middling 5-5 start to the cusp of a double-digit wins for the first time since the Manning days.

There is even an outside chance the Broncos could clinch a playoff spot this week. If Denver wins or ties on Thursday, and the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts follow with losses or ties over the weekend, the Broncos would be playoff bound.

Denver currently holds the No. 6 playoff seed in the AFC, while the Chargers (8-6) have dropped to No. 7.

The No. 7 seed could be facing a wild-card round matchup against the Buffalo Bills, while the No. 6 seed likely will meet the champion of the AFC North, where the Pittsburgh Steelers hold a one-game lead on the Baltimore Ravens.

ODDS AND TRENDS

The Chargers are a consensus 2.5-point favorite at home. The line opened at 3.0 at BetMGM, where the spread-line money has been evenly split while the Broncos have a slight edge with 51 percent of the total bets backing them.

The moneyline action has been interesting. While the Broncos have been backed by 75 percent of the total bets at +120, it's the Chargers who have drawn 56 percent of the money at -145.

The total points line has shifted down from 42.5 to 41.5, with the Over heavily supported with 63 percent of the bets and 72 percent of the money.

PROP PICKS

--Bo Nix Over 20.5 Rushing Yards (-115 at DraftKings): While Nix is mobile, he is not a dual-threat quarterback in the traditional sense of the term. He did rush for 23 yards last week after not scrambling for more than 5 in any of the previous four games. However, he did rack up 61 yards on the ground in the first meeting, contributing to this being the most popular prop bet at the book for this game.

--Kimani Vidal Over 1.5 Receptions (-175 at BetMGM): Bettors are banking on Vidal's increased involvement in the passing game, making this the second most bet-on prop at the book. That "increased involvement" entails last week specifically, when Vital caught two of three targets for a mere 13 yards. But with Gus Edwards' spotty production, Vidal was in on a season-high 67 percent of the offensive snaps last Sunday.

THE NEWS

While Nix threw three touchdown passes in a 31-13 home victory over the Colts on Sunday, he also had a career-high three interceptions.

"I thought I saw the game well, (but) I have to keep from turning the ball over," Nix said.

Nix and the Broncos could have fashioned a four-game winning streak earlier this season, but the Chargers came into Denver and earned a 23-16 victory in Week 6.

Nix threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes in that game and wound up with 216 yards in the air. Even so, he lost the duel against Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who threw for a touchdown and had 237 yards passing.

On Sunday against the Colts, Nix had just 130 passing yards, but Denver cashed in another strong defensive performance by putting up 24 second-half points, including 21 in the fourth quarter.

"Later in that game, when we needed it, man, there's a maturity and a moxie about him, which I love," Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Nix. "I think it's contagious to the team. When you have that at the quarterback position, your team knows that you're in every game."

If there was a moment when the Broncos gained their footing this season, it might have been in the second half against the Chargers. Trailing 23-0, Denver scored 16 fourth-quarter points while blanking Los Angeles to charge back and make it a game.

Since then, the Broncos have gone 6-2 to bypass the Chargers in the AFC West.

The Chargers have lost consecutive games and three of the past four after falling 40-17 at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. More than just the Los Angeles defense struggled, with the offense gaining only 32 rushing yards and Herbert throwing an interception for the first time in 12 games.

Not only did the Chargers give up the most points they have allowed this season, but they also yielded a season-high 506 yards, including a season-high 223 yards on the ground.

The Chargers still have a two-game lead on their closest wild-card pursuer with three games to play, so their situation is not dire. They also would clinch a playoff spot under a nearly identical scenario to the Broncos, with games still remaining against the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders, who have five combined wins.

INJURY REPORT

Herbert (sprained ankle) was limited at practice Tuesday but is expected to play. Los Angeles tight end Will Dissly (shoulder), guard Zion Johnson (ankle), defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia (pelvis) and defensive backs Cam Hart (concussion) and Elijah Molden (knee) did not practice on Tuesday.

The only Broncos player to miss practice on Tuesday was defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers (foot).

THEY SAID IT

"It's just up to us as an offense and us as a team to go out and execute and play the way we need to. Obviously, they're all important games in December and January. This is where we want to be." --Herbert

PREDICTION

While both teams are in excellent position to reach the playoffs, there is plenty on the line Thursday night in terms of seeding and potential playoff opponents. If Nix can avoid multiple turnovers, the Broncos are trending in the right direction and Denver's strong defense will be taking aim at a gimpy Herbert. --Broncos 26, Chargers 23

Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 16

Player Notes
Tee Higgins Dec 19 1:40pm CT
Tee Higgins

According to ESPN's Ben Baby, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins (rest, knee) is not practicing on Thursday. The news comes one day after the wideout was able to log a limited session. It's a concerning development for the 25-year-old, who picked up the issue in his team's win over the Tennessee Titans last Sunday. While he'll still get another chance to elevate his practice status on Friday, fantasy managers may want to prepare a contingency plan in case Higgins can't suit up for Week 16's bout with the visiting Cleveland Browns. If the Clemson product cannot play, fellow wideout Andre Iosivas would operate as the Bengals' de facto No. 2 WR with rookie Jermaine Burton working in behind him.

Patrick Mahomes Dec 19 1:30pm CT
Patrick Mahomes

Per head coach Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (ankle) will "most likely end up playing" this Saturday against the Houston Texans. Matt McMullen of the team reported the news. According to McMullen, wide receiver Marquise Brown (shoulder) also has a good chance to play. It's excellent news for the Chiefs as, at the point of Mahomes' injury, he appeared to be a candidate for missed time. With Kansas City still battling for a first-round bye, they're getting healthy at the right time. The 27-year-old will get a tough matchup against a visiting Texans defense that's allowed the sixth-fewest passing yards per game to opponents (196.9).

Alvin Kamara Dec 19 1:10pm CT
Alvin Kamara

NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill thinks there's a good chance New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara (groin) doesn't play on Monday night against the Green Bay Packers in Week 16. Kamara suffered an adductor injury in the Week 15 loss to the Washington Commanders, and all signs are pointing to him being held out this week. The Saints just signed Clyde Edwards-Helaire as RB depth earlier this week. Kamara has gone for tests on his injured groin, but interim head coach Darren Rizzi has declined to say if it's a minor or major injury. Underhill says himself to run out and grab Kendre Miller off the waiver wire if he's available in your league if you have Kamara rostered. We'll have a better idea of Kamara's status after the Saints begin practicing this week, but there's at least a good chance he'll miss Week 16 and potentially more, depending on how serious his groin injury is.

Zach Ertz Dec 19 12:40pm CT
Zach Ertz

Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol on Thursday and was seen wearing a black non-contact jersey on the practice field. Ertz is getting work in, but he's not practicing with the rest of the team for the second straight day. With just one day left of practice this week, he's on the wrong side of questionable for the Week 16 game this Sunday against the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles. Ertz was in line for more targets in last week's win over the New Orleans Saints with receiver Noah Brown (kidney) now out for the season, but he was injured in the second quarter last Sunday and never returned. With the 34-year-old veteran potentially missing Week 16, fantasy managers need to be looking in another direction at the TE position. We'd suggest avoiding John Bates and rookie Ben Sinnott in D.C., as the two will likely end up sharing snaps if Ertz is out.

From RotoBaller

David Njoku Dec 19 12:30pm CT
David Njoku

Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku (hamstring) was not seen at the portion of Thursday's practice that was open to the media. Njoku injured his hamstring in the Week 14 loss to the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers and sat out of last week's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He has yet to practice since suffering the injury, suggesting he's tracking toward missing a second straight game this weekend against the division-rival Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. With Njoku out last Sunday, backup Jordan Akins was on the field more but only caught three of four targets for 30 yards. Njoku had become a must-start TE1 in fantasy before his injury due to excellent chemistry with quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston is now benched in favor of Dorian Thompson-Robinson, so if Njoku is able to play this weekend, he'll be a more volatile TE1 option.

Rashod Bateman Dec 19 12:30pm CT
Rashod Bateman

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman (foot) did not practice on Thursday due to a foot injury and was wearing a walking boot in the locker room. Bateman popped up on the Week 16 injury report on Wednesday and was listed as limited in practice. Mid-week additions to the injury report are usually bad news, and that's especially the case for Bateman after he was downgraded to a DNP on Thursday. The Ravens receiving corps could be thinned out on Saturday in a tough matchup against the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers if both Bateman and Nelson Agholor (concussion) cannot play. Tylan Wallace and Devontez Walker could be thrust into bigger roles alongside Zay Flowers and tight ends Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely in the passing game. The 25-year-old Bateman is in the midst of a career year in 2024, but fantasy managers could be without him in semifinal matchups this week.

Baker Mayfield Dec 19 12:20pm CT
Baker Mayfield

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (knee) was practicing on Thursday during the portion open to the media. Mayfield was held out of the first practice of the week on Wednesday while tending to a knee issue, but the fact that he's back out there on Thursday means that he should be good to go for Week 16 against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. The 29-year-old is having a second straight strong season in Tampa in 2024 and is on pace for his second straight 4,000-yard season. He has already thrown a career-high 32 touchdown passes after going for four scores against a stout Los Angeles Chargers defense in the Week 15 win. Mayfield will be facing a Cowboys defense that has found their footing a bit of late after being decimated by injuries this year, but they've still allowed the third-most fantasy points to the position in the last five weeks. Mayfield is locked in as a top-10 fantasy QB.

From RotoBaller

Cade Otton Dec 19 12:20pm CT
Cade Otton

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Cade Otton (knee) was seen wearing a knee brace and was not seen working on Thursday at the portion of practice open to the media. Otton is set to open Week 16 preparation with two DNPs, putting him firmly in danger of missing the game this Sunday night versus the Dallas Cowboys. Otton has one more day to get back on the practice field, but at this point, a questionable tag might be the best-case scenario. And if that's the case, he'll be one to avoid in fantasy lineups with the Bucs not playing until Sunday evening. The 25-year-old was quarterback Baker Mayfield's go-to target when receiver Mike Evans missed some time with a hamstring, but since Evans returned, Otton has seen his ceiling and floor drop drastically. He caught two of three targets in last week's win over the Chargers for 24 yards. Payne Durham and Ko Kieft could split TE duties if Otton is out this week.

From RotoBaller

Alec Pierce Dec 19 12:10pm CT
Alec Pierce

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce (concussion) was seen doing some agility work off to the side during the team's practice on Thursday. Pierce is in the league's concussion protocol after suffering a head injury in the Week 15 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday and is missing his second straight practice on Thursday. He still has one day left to try and get on the practice field, but as things look right now, Pierce is trending toward being inactive in Week 16 against the division-rival Tennessee Titans on Sunday. If that's the case, rookie Adonai Mitchell would see a bigger role in three-wide sets alongside Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs. However, we still wouldn't consider Mitchell an intriguing flex play in fantasy if Pierce is out while going up against a Titans defense that has allowed the third-fewest half-PPR points per game to opposing receivers in 2024.

From RotoBaller

Michael Pittman Jr. Dec 19 12:00pm CT
Michael Pittman Jr.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. (back) is practicing on Thursday after resting his back on Wednesday. Pittman has been managing a back injury of late, but he managed to play 96 percent of the offensive snaps in the Week 15 loss to the Denver Broncos and caught six of his nine targets for 58 yards while losing a crucial fumble in the second half. The 27-year-old has at least five receptions and seven targets in each of the last four games, but he hasn't found the end zone since Oct. 13 and only has one 100-yard game in 2024. Pittman's fantasy stock has taken a hit this year in Indy's low-volume passing attack and with young quarterback Anthony Richardson struggling with accuracy and consistency. The good news is that one of Pittman's two TDs on the year came against the division-rival Titans in their first meeting, although they also allow the third-fewest PPR points to receivers.

Rashod Bateman Dec 19 11:50am CT
Rashod Bateman

Baltimore Ravens wide receivers Rashod Bateman (foot) and Nelson Agholor (concussion) were both missing from practice on Thursday. Agholor was working on a side field but is unlikely to play on Saturday against the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers after not practicing on Tuesday or Wednesday. Bateman, meanwhile, popped up on the Week 16 injury report on Wednesday and was listed as limited. We'll have to wait and see how the Ravens list Bateman on Thursday's final injury report, but a DNP on the final day of practice isn't a good sign for his availability this weekend. If both Bateman and Agholor are ruled out, it will mean more targets for both Zay Flowers and tight ends Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely, with receivers Tylan Wallace and Devontez Waker seeing bigger roles in the passing game as well. Against a tough defense, quarterback Lamar Jackson's struggles against Pittsburgh could continue.

Russell Wilson Dec 19 11:40am CT
Russell Wilson

When asked if he would like to run it back with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025, quarterback Russell Wilson said, "Hopefully, I love it here. It's cool. Hopefully we're going to win a Super Bowl." Wilson is playing for a league-minimum salary of $1.2 million with the Steelers in 2024 after the Denver Broncos guaranteed him $39 million this year. He'll become a free agent after the 2024 season, though, and has proven this year in Pittsburgh that he still has what it takes to win in the NFL as a starter. The 36-year-old veteran got a late start to the year due to a lingering calf issue, but he replaced Justin Fields when he was fully healthy and hasn't looked back, completing 64.7% of his passes for 1,912 yards, 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions in eight games. The eight-time Pro Bowler ranks as the QB15 in average fantasy points per game. With his top wideout George Pickens (hamstring) potentially missing a third straight game, Wilson is shaping up as a low-end QB2 despite a good matchup versus Baltimore this week.

Brenton Strange Dec 19 11:40am CT
Brenton Strange

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said that tight end Brenton Strange (shoulder) suffered an AC joint sprain last week in the loss to the New York Jets but that he will be fine to play in Week 16 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Strange was limited in the first practice of the week on Wednesday. With Evan Engram (shoulder) out for the year, Strange is Jacksonville's top pass-catching tight end option for the remainder of the regular season. He stood out right away in the loss to the Jets, catching 11 of his 12 targets from quarterback Mac Jones for 73 yards. Going into the Week 15 game, Strange had just 31 targets all season long. Jones leaned heavily on Strange last week and could continue doing so in the final three games of the year, giving Strange TE1 upside for the remainder of the fantasy playoffs. He'll look to soak up targets yet again this Sunday in an excellent matchup against the two-win Raiders.

Isaac Guerendo Dec 19 11:30am CT
Isaac Guerendo

San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury and is unlikely to play in Week 16 versus the hosting Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, according to a source. The Niners' backfield has just been decimated by injuries this year, with Christian McCaffrey (knee), Jordan Mason (ankle) and Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) already out for the season. Guerendo handled himself nicely as the starting RB for San Fran the last two games, carrying the ball 31 times for 135 yards (4.35 yards per carry) and two touchdowns while catching all six of his targets for another 68 yards. Fantasy managers won't have him available for semifinal matchups this week, though, with Patrick Taylor Jr. likely sharing rushing attempts with receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. against Miami. Israel Abanikanda will also likely be available as a backup. Taylor will be an RB3/flex, at best, in fantasy.

Tua Tagovailoa Dec 19 11:20am CT
Tua Tagovailoa

The Miami Dolphins have no concerns about quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (hip) being limited at practice due to a hip injury on Wednesday as the team prepares to face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in Week 16. "No concern with us," offensive coordinator Frank Smith said. Tagovailoa appears to be a little beat up coming out of the Week 15 loss to the Houston Texans, which is why he was limited in the first practice of the week, but he's in no danger of sitting out this weekend. As long as Tagovailoa is able to return to a full practice on Thursday or Friday, he should be removed from the final injury report heading into Sunday. The 26-year-old signal-caller broke a streak of three straight games with 300-plus passing yards in last week's loss to Houston in which he threw for under 200 yards and three interceptions. The Niners defense hasn't been kind to opposing QBs this year, making Tua more of a high-end QB2.

Marquise Brown Dec 19 11:10am CT
Marquise Brown

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to activate wide receiver Marquise Brown (shoulder) from Injured Reserve for Saturday's game against the Houston Texans, according to sources, assuming everything continues to trend positive for Brown this week. Brown required surgery for a shoulder injury he suffered in the preseason, which caused him to miss four months. He's been practicing in full this week, though, and is ready to make his debut with the team. Before we knew Brown needed surgery on his shoulder, he was a popular stash candidate in fantasy leagues. He's still rostered in 28% of Yahoo leagues, but even though he's on his way to being active in Week 16, fantasy managers should avoid starting him this weekend in his first game back. The Chiefs have since added DeAndre Hopkins and JuJu Smith-Schuster at wideout, and Brown will likely play a limited number of snaps against the Texans this weekend.

Hayden Hurst Dec 19 11:10am CT
Hayden Hurst

The Los Angeles Chargers plan to activate tight end Hayden Hurst (hip) from Injured Reserve to play in Thursday's divisional clash against the visiting Denver Broncos, according to a source. Hurst landed on IR in late November with a hip injury, but he has practiced in full since having his 21-day practice window opened this week. It's good timing for the 31-year-old with fellow tight end Will Dissly (shoulder) already ruled out for Week 16. Hurst last played in Week 10, though, so it's fair to expect him to be on a limited snap count in his first game back on a short week. Additionally, Hurst won't be a viable starting option in fantasy in a tough matchup against the stout Broncos defense. Hurst should work alongside Stone Smartt, who will be the better TE2 streaming upside play in DFS and deeper fantasy leagues. Hurst caught only seven passes for 65 yards on 12 targets in seven games before going on IR.

Isaiah Davis Dec 19 12:10am CT
Isaiah Davis

New York Jets running backs Braelon Allen (back) and Isaiah Davis (back) were both limited in practice on Wednesday. As the Jets prepare for Week 16, Allen and Davis are two names to monitor. Typically, players who are limited on Wednesday manage to log full sessions by Friday, but that's never a guarantee. Having Allen and Davis available is key for the Jets as they look to take some of the workload off Breece Hall's shoulders. Hall, who missed Week 14 with a knee injury, returned last Sunday but registered just nine carries and two receptions. Assuming Allen and Davis both play this Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, the two rookies would be candidates to earn a handful of touches.
