Saints release underachieving RB Jamaal Williams

Tue Mar 4 6:28pm ET
Field Level Media

The New Orleans Saints released running back Jamaal Williams on Tuesday, reportedly clearing $1.59 million in salary cap space.

Williams signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Saints after having a career season with the Detroit Lions in 2022.

But his production was meager in 27 games (five starts) with New Orleans. Williams had just 470 rushing yards and two touchdowns and caught 27 passes for 119 yards.

Last season, Williams had 164 yards and one touchdown on the ground and nine receptions for 57 yards in 14 games (one start).

In 2022, Williams rushed for 1,066 yards and an NFL-high 17 rushing touchdowns with the Lions before becoming a free agent.

Williams, who turns 30 next month, has rushed for 4,122 yards and 32 touchdowns and caught 187 passes for 1,310 yards and eight TDs in 117 games (45 starts) with the Green Bay Packers (2017-20), Lions (2021-22) and Saints.

Davante Adams Mar 4 5:43pm CT
Davante Adams

Dynasty | The Jets have released wide receiver Davante Adams. Dynasty Analysis: This was always the most likely scenario after the Jets decided to move on from Aaron Rodgers. Adams will immediately become the best receiver on the open market and will have control over choosing who he'll play for next season. He's rumored to be interested in playing on the West Coast, with teams like the 49ers, Rams, and Chargers on his list. He'll also likely wait to see just what happens with Aaron Rodgers before making a choice. He's still a productive player and should still be a WR1/2 next season, regardless of where he lands and his dynasty value shouldn't crater too much with this move. On the plus side, you may be able to return those Davante Adams Jets jerseys.

Allen Lazard Mar 4 5:43pm CT
Allen Lazard

Dynasty | The Jets have granted wide receiver Allen Lazard permission to seek a trade. Dynasty Analysis: Lazard was always tied to Aaron Rodgers and while the Jets are saying the right things in terms of possibly bringing him back, that seems a little unlikely at the moment. He could fetch a late round pick swap at this point in his career, but is more likely to be released to join Rodgers at his latest stop. Lazard is no more than a roster clogger on dynasty rosters and has minimal dynasty value.

T.J. Watt Mar 4 5:43pm CT
T.J. Watt

Pittsburgh Steelers LB T.J. Watt could receive a contract extension sooner than later to help create cap space and allow the team to get ahead of the financial ramifications of massive contracts for Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett and Dallas Cowboys LB Micah Parsons.

Sauce Gardner Mar 4 5:42pm CT
Sauce Gardner

New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner is expected to reset the cornerback market as the highest-paid player because the two-time All-Pro is arguably the league's best shutdown cornerback, sources told SNY's Connor Hughes. The Jets will also likely consider an extension for wide receiver Garrett Wilson soon, but sources agreed that Gardner's new deal is far simpler. Additionally, Hughes got the sense at this year's NFL Combine in Indianapolis that the new Jets regime of general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn are much more open to the idea of extending players after three years than former GM Joe Douglas was. Sources think that any extensions that Mougey and Glenn reward players with will be fair and to market value, assuming the organization has the financial means to pull it off. Gardner, the former fourth overall pick, had a career-low 49 tackles (36 solo), one sack and an interception in 15 starts in 2024.

Courtland Sutton Mar 4 5:33pm CT
Courtland Sutton

Pittsburgh Steelers WR George Pickens is not expected to be available via trade, according to sources, and the organization views any additions at the position as complementary to him. It is believed the Steelers will not add any wide receiver salaries without settling the quarterback position first, but addressing the position will be a top priority. Pittsburgh could pursue Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton via trade if contract talks with Denver break down, sources said. Last year, the Steelers showed interest in Jacksonville Jaguars WR Christian Kirk and WR Darius Slayton (Giants) at the trade deadline, and both could be in play again provided Kirk is released, in the opinion of PennLive's Nick Farabaugh.

Saquon Barkley Mar 4 5:13pm CT
Saquon Barkley

Dynasty | The Eagles have signed running back Saquon Barkley to an extension. Dynasty Analysis: It's a two-year, $41.2 million contract with $36 million guaranteed. He now becomes the highest-paid running back and first ever to make more than $20 million per season. Many others will attempt to use this as a barometer of their own value, but Barkley proved he was in a tier of his own last season with 2,005 rushing yards in just 16 games. Fresh off a Super Bowl win, he's the ultimate trade target for a contending team as he's aging, but still capable of being the overall RB1 next season.

Sam Darnold Mar 4 5:13pm CT
Sam Darnold

Dynasty | Quarterback Sam Darnold avoided the franchise tag from Minnesota and will become a free agent. Dynasty Analysis: This always looked like the most likely scenario. Still, the Vikings are risking him finding greener pastures elsewhere after he proved he can (and should) be a starter in the NFL last season. After posting 4,319 passing yards with 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, Darnold will have a market with teams like Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, the Giants, and maybe even the Jets interested in his services. The Vikings are also working hard to get him back into the fold as well. Darnold should be a QB2 next season at worst and the best scenario for dynasty managers is honestly to see him move on instead of being threatened by JJ McCarthy in Minnesota.

Donte Jackson Mar 4 5:10pm CT
Donte Jackson

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to target cornerback early in free agency this offseason, team sources told Penn Live's Nick Farabaugh. Specifically, the Steelers are expected to pursue Nate Hobbs, who has a lot of experience with new defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander from their time together with the Las Vegas Raiders. Other names tossed around by sources at the NFL Combine last week that could be pursued by the Steelers include D.J. Reed, Carlton Davis, and Charvarius Ward. The Steelers are also leaving the door open for Donte Jackson to return, but it's not a priority with free agency right around the corner. In addition to a strong crop of free-agent cornerbacks, the Steelers could also look to address the position through the draft.

George Pickens Mar 4 5:10pm CT
George Pickens

One of the Pittsburgh Steelers' top priorities this offseason will be adding a wide receiver, and Penn Live's Nick Farabaugh writes that a new receiver is expected to complement George Pickens instead of replacing him. Sources have talked down the idea of the Steelers trading Pickens despite his maturity issues in 2024. Pittsburgh will exhaust every avenue once again as they look to add a receiver, with sources pointing to the trade market as a likely avenue. However, the team doesn't play to make any moves at the position until they know who will be starting at quarterback. If the Denver Broncos' talks on a long-term extension with receiver Courtland Sutton break down, the Steelers will be aggressive in trying to trade for him. Farabaugh also expects the Steelers to circle back to Darius Slayton and Christian Kirk, two wideouts that the team was interested in at last year's trade deadline.

Najee Harris Mar 4 5:00pm CT
Najee Harris

Sources told Penn Live's Nick Farabaugh at the NFL Combine last week that the Pittsburgh Steelers are unlikely to re-sign Najee Harris because they will be unwilling to match the $8-10 million per year he's expected to get on the open market. Harris is expected to have a strong market in what is a weak RB class in free agency, and the Las Vegas Raiders could be his biggest suitor. Meanwhile, fellow RB Jaylen Warren is a restricted free agent, but the team has already said they will tender him an offer and there is a desire within the organization to start contract talks with Warren this summer on a long-term extension. Harris, 26, has started all 68 games for the Steelers in his first four seasons in the NFL and has also exceeded 1,000 yards rushing all four years. A move to a team like Vegas with questions at QB could make Harris even less attractive as an RB2 in fantasy, while Warren's stock will improve if Harris leaves.

Chase Brown Mar 4 4:50pm CT
Chase Brown

Bengals beat writer Geoff Hobson gets the sense that the Cincinnati Bengals are looking to go bigger for a complement to lead back Chase Brown this offseason with Zack Moss' (neck) status unclear. Brown played big as a three-down back in 2024 after Moss' injury and racked up an impressive 1,350 scrimmage yards on 283 touches while also protecting quarterback Joe Burrow, but offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher wouldn't mind another big and physical back to help Brown out. "The easy answer is Chase isn't the biggest guy, so maybe if you have an opportunity to add a bigger back with a little more power repertoire to his game, that size helps you in protection," Pitcher said. The 24-year-old Brown finished as the RB12 in half-PPR scoring in 2024 thanks to his workhorse role, and although he should remain the lead back in a high-scoring offense, fantasy managers should expect some regression.

Sam Darnold Mar 4 4:30pm CT
Sam Darnold

The Minnesota Vikings officially did not place the franchise tag on impending free-agent quarterback Sam Darnold by Tuesday's deadline, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. However, the two sides will continue to work towards a deal that is best for both sides. Although the 27-year-old could return to Minnesota after a career year in 2024, it's probably only likely to happen if his market in free agency isn't as robust as expected. The bottom line is that the Vikings don't want to hold back last year's first-rounder J.J. McCarthy (knee) and would probably prefer to bring Daniel Jones back as an insurance policy at a much cheaper cost. After the Los Angeles Rams restructured QB Matthew Stafford's contract, Darnold is the top available signal-caller, with his most likely landing spots being the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants. For fantasy purposes, obviously staying in Minnesota as the starter would be the most ideal for Darnold.

Roy Robertson-Harris Mar 4 4:30pm CT
Roy Robertson-Harris

The Seattle Seahawks released outside linebacker Dre'Mont Jones, offensive tackle George Fan, safety Rayshawn Jenkins and defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris on Tuesday. Jones appeared in all 34 games in his two years in Seattle, although he took a big step back in 2024 with only four sacks, his lowest total since his rookie season in 2019. The 28-year-old started in only seven games last year and had 8.5 sacks, 77 tackles (12 for loss) and 25 QB hits in his time with the Seahawks. Fant, 32, spent most of the year on Injured Reserve in 2024 with a knee injury and only started in two games. Jenkins, 31, lost his starting job to Coby Bryant halfway through last year, which makes it no surprise that he's getting cut. Robertson-Harris, 31, was acquired in a trade last year with the Jaguars and had only 13 combined tackles in 11 games with the Seahawks.

Jamaal Williams Mar 4 4:20pm CT
Jamaal Williams

The New Orleans Saints released running back Jamaal Williams on Tuesday, according to The 33rd Team's Ari Meirov. The move comes after Williams' worst season as a pro in 2024 in his second year with the Saints. The 29-year-old was rarely used behind starter Alvin Kamara and finished with a career-low 48 rushing attempts for 164 yards and one touchdown while adding only nine receptions for 57 yards on 11 targets in 14 games (one start). Williams had a league-high 17 rushing touchdowns in 2022 in his final year with the Detroit Lions but averaged just 3.1 yards per carry, 470 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his 27 games (five starts) in two seasons with the Saints. He's unlikely to garner a ton of interest on the open market in free agency this offseason and will almost certainly have to settle for a depth role at RB wherever he signs.

Dak Prescott Mar 4 4:03pm CT
Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (hamstring) has yet to be cleared to return to the hamstring injury that ended his season and may not be participate in any offseason practices, but he has no doubt that he will be ready to play by Week 1 of the 2025 season. 'I'm not gonna put a timeline on it, but I'll be ready for the first game and when anything matters and very, very ready,' the three-time Pro Bowler said. 'I'm feeling good. I'm doing more and more. The last two weeks have been huge and progressive for me,' Prescott said during a recent public appearance.

Fantasy Spin: The Cowboys need Prescott healthy in 2025, if only because they may not have another quarterback on the roster familiar with new head coach Brian Schottenheimer's playbook. Dallas also has plenty of work to do from a roster-building perspective, as the offensive line and running back are two major concerns. As long as Prescott and CeeDee Lamb stay healthy this season, however, Prescott should be a more than serviceable fantasy QB2.

Sam Darnold Mar 4 3:13pm CT
Sam Darnold

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold has reportedly been in discussions with the team about agreeing to a short-term contract before the start of free agency, according to sources. Per those sources, there is mutual interest to 'keep this relationship going.'

Fantasy Spin: This is not exactly new information, as the word out in Minnesota for some time has been about the Vikings hoping to keep Darnold around. The reason this report is newsworthy is because it reinforces the notion that both sides are actively trying to get something done before the start of free agency. The incentive for Minnesota is to keep a capable starting quarterback around and the incentive for Darnold is to continue playing with one of the best supporting casts in the league.

Sam Darnold Mar 4 2:53pm CT
Sam Darnold

Updating previous reports, Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold will not receive the franchise tag before the 4 PM EST deadline on March 4 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent, according to sources.

Fantasy Spin: Per earlier reports, the Vikings and Darnold will continue to negotiate, but it appears likely Darnold will have no shortage of suitors and is unlikely to return to Minnesota. The most obvious and/or realistic fits for Darnold are the Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders, but the Raiders are reportedly not all that interested. Either way, Darnold will likely command at least $40 million/season when he decides to sign. This development is also great news for J.J. McCarthy, who should enter the 2025 season as the unquestioned starter as long as Darnold does not return on a team-friendly deal.
