Colts DT DeForest Buckner, RB Jonathan Taylor practicing Wednesday

Wed Oct 23 12:07pm ET
Field Level Media

Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was designated to return to practice for the first time since he was placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain in September.

Buckner, 30, had missed only two games in his nine-year NFL career prior to his first IR stint.

He was carted off the field in the third quarter of the Colts' 16-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 15.

Buckner missed more than the minimum four games. The Colts' 16-10 win over the Dolphins was the team's fifth game without Buckner, and it could be their last. Indianapolis has 21 days to activate Buckner and add him back to the 53-man roster.

Head coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday that Buckner and running back Jonathan Taylor would participate in practice. Decisions on their full availability will come later in the week.

Taylor hasn't played in the past three games because of an ankle injury, but he still leads the Colts in carries (72), rushing yards (349) and rushing touchdowns (four). Quarterback Anthony Richardson is second in rushing yards (197).

Buckner has 1.5 sacks and seven tackles in two games (one start) this season. He has 62.5 career sacks with the San Francisco 49ers (2016-19) and Colts. He has started 126 of the 131 games he's played in, making the Pro Bowl three times and earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2020.

Buckner signed a two-year, $46 million extension with the Colts in April, a deal that takes effect next season. He's in the final year of a four-year, $84 million pact.

Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 8

Player Notes
Nico Collins Oct 23 11:20am CT
Nico Collins

Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins (hamstring), who is currently on Injured Reserve with a hamstring injury, is doing well in his recovery and hasn't had any setbacks, according to sources. Collins will have to miss at least two more games, but there is optimism that his original three- to four-week timetable is on track. The earliest he'll be eligible to come off IR and play will be on Nov. 10 at home in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions. The 25-year-old was among the league's leading receivers at the time of his injury, so he obviously needs to be stashed by all fantasy managers for a couple more weeks. Hopefully Collins can pick up where he left off when he's back after catching 32 of 45 targets for 567 yards and three touchdowns in five games played. For another two weeks, Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell will have higher ceilings with Collins sidelined.

Adam Thielen Oct 23 11:20am CT
Adam Thielen

The Carolina Panthers are opening wide receiver Adam Thielen's (hamstring) 21-day practice window on Wednesday for him to return from Injured Reserve. Thielen was placed on IR with a right-hamstring injury and he's already missed the required four games, meaning that if the Panthers like what they see from him in practices this week, they could activate him on Saturday and have him active for Week 8 against the Denver Broncos. The 34-year-old will slot into starting three-wide sets upon his return alongside Diontae Johnson and rookie Xavier Legette. In three games before getting injured, Thielen caught just eight of 12 targets for 109 yards and one touchdown. His fantasy upside upon his return won't be as high as it was a year ago with the rookie Legette becoming a part of this offense.

Jonathan Taylor Oct 23 11:10am CT
Jonathan Taylor

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) will return to practice on Wednesday, according to head coach Shane Steichen. The Colts said on Monday that they were optimistic that Taylor would resume practicing this week, which could put him on track to return to play this Sunday against the division-rival Houston Texans. The 25-year-old has not practiced or played the last three weeks after suffering a high-ankle sprain. Taylor returning to practice this week doesn't make him a lock to suit up in Week 8, but it's an encouraging sign for the Colts and fantasy managers. Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson have split the backfield the last three weeks, but with Taylor nearing a return, their usefulness as short-term flex options in fantasy is about to run out. If Taylor is active against Houston, he'll be a must-start in fantasy lineups.

Keaton Mitchell Oct 23 11:10am CT
Keaton Mitchell

The Baltimore Ravens are planning for running back Keaton Mitchell (knee), who has been out all season since suffering a serious knee injury last December, to start his three-week practice window this week, according to sources. Mitchell has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list all year but is now nearing a return. The Ravens will have 21 days to officially activate him from the PUP. They'll get a look at him in practice this week, but that doesn't mean he'll make his 2024 debut this weekend against the division-rival Cleveland Browns. The 22-year-old tore his ACL in Week 15 of 2023, so he's likely to be eased into a backfield that boasts the NFL's leading rusher in Derrick Henry. When Mitchell is fully ready, he'll give Baltimore another explosive backfield option alongside Henry and Justice Hill. Mitchell is worth stashing in most fantasy leagues, especially if you have Henry rostered as well.

Devin White Oct 23 10:20am CT
Devin White

The Houston Texans are signing free-agent linebacker Devin White, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The sixth-year veteran was released by the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this month after signing a one-year deal with the team this offseason. White spent the first five seasons of his career as a Buccaneer after Tampa Bay selected the LSU product with the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old was a productive defender in his time in Tampa, recording 91+ total tackles in each of his first four seasons. However, he did not appear in a game this year for Philadelphia after losing out on the starting job to the Eagles' Nakobe Dean. He's likely a depth piece for Houston, but White's athleticism could earn him a higher share of snaps than initially anticipated. The Texans will square off against their division-rival Indianapolis Colts this Sunday in Week 8.

Aaron Rodgers Oct 23 10:10am CT
Aaron Rodgers

According to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (knee, ankle, hamstring) is dealing with a multitude of injuries, as Jonathan Jones of CBS reported. Per ESPN's Rich Cimini, the 40-year-old veteran is listed as limited for Wednesday's team practice. Rodgers has dealt with ankle and knee injuries thus far in 2024, but the soft tissue issue is new. The QB's hamstring apparently "flared up" during New York's 37-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football. Fortunately, the sentiment around the team seems to be that it won't put his status at risk for Week 8. Still, fantasy managers may want to keep an eye on him over the coming days. The Jets will line up against the New England Patriots in a divisional clash this Sunday.

Nate Wiggins Oct 23 9:50am CT
Nate Wiggins

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey (knee) has not suffered a significant knee injury, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL. The 28-year-old recorded the first multi-interception game of his career on Monday Night in the Ravens' 41-31 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The injury came on his second pick before halftime, in which he collided with teammate Nate Wiggins and was eventually ruled out. It's excellent news for Baltimore, as Rapoport noted he's "walking around with little discomfort." Despite the good news, the All-Pro DB's status for the team's Week 9 divisional matchup against the Cleveland Browns is up in the air. While it appears they've dodged a bullet for now, he will be one to monitor ahead of an outing against a bottom-four offense in the league regarding points per game (15.6).

Will Levis Oct 23 9:40am CT
Will Levis

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis (shoulder) is an unlikely candidate to suit up for the team's Week 8 road tilt against the Detroit Lions. The second-year QB picked up an AC joint sprain in Tennessee's Week 4 victory over the Miami Dolphins and was able to suit up in their Week 6 loss to the Colts. However, Levis reaggravated his injury in practice last week, opening the door for teammate Mason Rudolph to get the start in Week 7. While head coach Bill Callahan has already reported that the Kentucky alum will remain the team's starter when he's healthy, it's more probable he will return to action in Week 9. The former second-round pick is recovering from a Grade 2 sprain.

Chris Godwin Oct 23 9:20am CT
Chris Godwin

The NFL's Ian Rapoport reports that Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin (ankle) will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair his dislocated ankle. Rapoport noted that tests done leading up to surgery were "as good as they could've been," according to sources. Additionally, there is an outside shot Godwin could return in 2024, depending on how late in the winter the Bucs play. However, the likelihood of such an outcome is not very good. With fellow wideout Mike Evans (hamstring) expected to miss time through Week 11, Tampa Bay is suddenly reeling on offense. It'd not be surprising to see the team seek veteran help, but in the meantime, wide receivers Jalen McMillan, Trey Palmer, and Sterling Shepherd will attempt to fill the void. Running back Rachaad White and tight end Cade Otton should also continue to see an uptick in usage.

DeAndre Hopkins Oct 23 7:03am CT
DeAndre Hopkins

Tennessee Titans WR DeAndre Hopkins will reportedly be traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to sources.

Fantasy Spin: There is no word yet what the compensation might be, but the Chiefs are on the verge of landing the X receiver they so desperately need. Hopkins has become a forgotten man in Tennessee, drawing only 21 targets in six games. In Kansas City, he would give Patrick Mahomes a quality possession receiver capable of winning in contested-catch situations. Hopkins would almost certainly be no worse than a WR2 for fantasy purposes if this trade happens.

From TheHuddle

DeAndre Hopkins Oct 23 6:20am CT
DeAndre Hopkins

The Tennessee Titans are trading star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (leg) to the Kansas City Chiefs for a conditional fourth-round pick. The Chiefs have been decimated with injuries at the wide receiver position, losing Rashee Rice (knee) and Marquise Brown (shoulder) out for the season. JuJu Smith-Schuster (hamstring) is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury. Hopkins immediately fills the void as Kansas City's No. 1 wide receiver and should immediately become one of quarterback Patrick Mahomes' top targets. Hopkins was having a down season, catching 15 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown over six games with the Titans. The 32-year-old is dealing with lower leg soreness, but the injury isn't severe enough to keep him sidelined. Hopkins is only rostered in 50% of Yahoo Fantasy leagues and should be added in all leagues as the veteran wideout should see a boost in production as Kansas City's new No. 1 wide receiver.

Jalen Nailor Oct 23 12:10am CT
Jalen Nailor

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jalen Nailor is riding the momentum of a strong Week 7 into this Thursday's clash with the Los Angeles Rams. The 25-year-old turned in his highest reception and yardage totals of the season last Sunday, catching four of five targets for 76 yards. It's been an inconsistent year for Nailor, who was a productive WR3 for the first three weeks of the season before catching just one pass between Weeks 4 and 5. It's unclear which version of Nailor we'll see in Week 8, but it's worth noting that the Rams have been productive against wide receivers this year. Los Angeles has surrendered the ninth-fewest fantasy points and third-fewest receptions to opposing wide receivers so far. He's tough to trust in fantasy lineups despite managers balancing an onslaught of injuries and bye weeks.

From RotoBaller

Will Reichard Oct 23 12:10am CT
Will Reichard

Minnesota Vikings kicker Will Reichard has maintained perfection through the first six games of his rookie campaign, and he'll look to keep that streak going against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football in Week 8. Reichard is 12-for-12 on field goals and 18-for-18 on extra points, nailing four kicks from 50-plus yards out. He has been a top-six fantasy kicker in three of his last four games, and now he benefits from a favorable matchup against a Rams unit allowing the 11th-most fantasy points per game to opposing kickers. Managers should take advantage of Reichard's impressive stretch and insert him into their lineup for Week 8 and beyond, especially since he's already had his bye week.

From RotoBaller

Jordan Addison Oct 23 12:00am CT
Jordan Addison

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison is a worthwhile WR3/flex option heading into Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams. While he's always a threat to score touchdowns, he doesn't have major upside in his current role against a respectable Rams passing defense. Addison has been held to three catches in all four of his games this season, and he typically commands around four targets. This trend of relatively low volume should continue against a Los Angeles defense allowing the third-fewest receptions and the ninth-fewest fantasy points to opposing receivers this year. Addison has been a top-24 receiver in just one of his four games so far, and he's ranked outside the top 50 in two of those four.

From RotoBaller

Justin Jefferson Oct 22 11:40pm CT
Justin Jefferson

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson continues to rank as a high-end WR1 for fantasy football heading into Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams. While Jefferson's volume has taken a step backward in the Vikings' Sam Darnold-led offense (he's averaging a relatively modest 5.5 catches per game and has not caught more than seven passes in a single game this year), he's a major scoring threat in the Minnesota offense. Not only does he have a touchdown in five of the Vikings' six games this year, but he's also facing off against a Rams defense allowing the ninth-most touchdowns to opposing wide receivers in 2024. All in all, Jefferson has the highest upside among all players in the Vikings' offense and should be treated as high-end WR1 for Thursday night's clash against the Rams.

Cam Akers Oct 22 9:10pm CT
Cam Akers

Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers was traded from the Houston Texans last week. He was active for last week's game against the Detroit Lions but didn't handle any carries in the backfield. However, Akers could see some action with lead back Aaron Jones (hamstring) on the injury report ahead of Thursday's Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The absence of Jones would likely mean that Ty Chandler takes over as the lead back. Akers figures to be the primary backup to Chandler and would probably see at least a handful of carries. Akers might be worth a stash in deep leagues, but it's hard to imagine him having much value as the third string.

From RotoBaller

Ty Chandler Oct 22 9:00pm CT
Ty Chandler

Minnesota Vikings running back Ty Chandler has been quiet as the primary backup this season. In fact, Chandler has rushed for 30 yards or less in every game but one this season. Chandler only saw two carries during last week's loss to the Detroit Lions. However, Chandler could see a bigger role in Week 8 with lead back Aaron Jones (hamstring) on the injury report. It's a short week as the Vikings play the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. The absence of Jones would mean Chandler likely becomes the lead back with Cam Akers being his primary backup. Chandler saw 14 carries in Week 5 and only managed 30 yards on the ground. Fantasy managers in desperate need of running back help should stash Chandler, but he's not worth even considering starting unless Jones sits out.

From RotoBaller

Sam Darnold Oct 22 8:50pm CT
Sam Darnold

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold has cooled off from his electric 11 touchdowns over the first four games. Since then, Darnold has one touchdown and two interceptions over his last two games. It's worth noting that Darnold did throw for nearly 260 yards during last week's loss to the Detroit Lions. He was consistent as he completed 22-of-27 passing attempts during the two-point loss. He'll get a Los Angeles Rams defense that has struggled to contain the pass. They currently rank 18th in the league, which is good news for Darnold. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Darnold to throw four touchdowns, but he should be a viable option for Week 8.

Tua Tagovailoa Oct 22 8:30pm CT
Tua Tagovailoa

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) is expected to suit up for practice on Wednesday. This would be the first time that Tagovailoa has practiced since exiting the Week 2 matchup against the Buffalo Bills due to a concussion. There were rumors about Tagovailoa being done for the season if not having his career ended over concussions. However, Tagovailoa appears to be on track to start against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 8, barring any setbacks. His return to the field is a welcoming sight and he should boost the fantasy value of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle who are off to sluggish starts with the Dolphins backups.
