Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren among 9 coaching candidates for HOF

Field Level Media

Super Bowl-winning head coaches Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan and George Seifert are among the nine semifinalists from the coach category nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Only one finalist from the group can be named a finalist to be considered by the full Hall of Fame Selection Committee for possible election in 2025.

The Coach Blue-Ribbon Committee narrowed a list of 14 candidates to these semifinalists: Bill Arnsparger, Coughlin, Holmgren, Chuck Knox, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert, Shanahan and Clark Shaughnessy. All but Arnsparger, Knox and Seifert reached the semifinalist stage in 2023.

The same committee is scheduled for a virtual meeting on Nov. 19 to nominate one finalist to be considered for enshrinement.

Earlier this week, the Hall of Fame semifinalists from the contributor category, from which one finalist will be up for consideration with the next Hall of Fame class, were released: K.S. "Bud" Adams, Ralph Hay, Frank "Bucko" Kilroy, Robert Kraft, Art Modell, Art Rooney Jr., Seymour Siwoff, Doug Williams and John Wooten.

A grand total of 20 finalists are presented for debate at the selection committee's annual meeting in advance of Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, including 15 modern-era players, three seniors, one coach and one contributor. Between four and eight new members will be selected, according to the Hall of Fame's selection process bylaws.

Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 9

Player Notes
Robert Woods Nov 1 8:40am CT
Robert Woods

Houston Texans wide receiver Robert Woods was expected to be a bigger part of the offense in the Thursday night game against the New York Jets. During the 21-13 loss, he saw three targets and caught two of them for 44 yards. The Jets' defense shut down the passing game as they only put up 135 yards through the air compared to 187 on the ground. C.J. Stroud was also sacked eight times, so Woods didn't have much of a chance to get open. The Texans will get some extra rest heading into their Week 10 matchup against another good defense in the Detroit Lions.

Ka'imi Fairbairn Nov 1 8:40am CT
Ka'imi Fairbairn

Houston Texans kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn had a rough outing on Thursday night along with the rest of the team in the 21-13 loss to the New York Jets. The 30-year-old made a 29 and 54-yarder as well as an extra point but missed a 27 and 56-yarder. This was the first game all season that Fairbairn missed more than one field goal which brings his overall percentage down to 84.0%. He'll look to bounce back in a Sunday night game against the Detroit Lions in Week 10.

Will Anderson Jr. Nov 1 8:10am CT
Will Anderson Jr.

Houston Texans edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. (ankle) was forced to leave their Thursday night game against the New York Jets after suffering an ankle injury in the first quarter. The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year seemed to have his ankle rolled on as he tried to tackle the ball carrier and looked to be in a lot of pain. After getting his ankle taped, he tried returning to the game but was ultimately ruled out in the second quarter. Ian Rapoport says that his injury is worth monitoring going into next week, but Anderson will benefit from extra days of rest since they don't play until Sunday night of next week.

Micheal Clemons Nov 1 4:30am CT
Micheal Clemons

The New York Jets defense played well in a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. New York sacked C.J. Stroud eight times while forcing one turnover, a Stroud fumble, in the close win. The Jets defense made things tough for Stroud and the Houston offense all night, allowing just 322 yards of total offense. They were led by Jamien Sherwood and Micheal Clemons, who notched two sacks apiece. The Jets will look to stay hot against the Arizona Cardinals on the road in Week 10.

Davante Adams Nov 1 4:20am CT
Davante Adams

New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams caught seven of his 11 targets for 91 yards and a touchdown in a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. Adams and Aaron Rodgers connected for their first touchdown since they played for the Green Bay Packers together back in 2022 on a 37-yard strike in the fourth quarter. The big outing from Adams easily goes in the books as his best effort since the Jets acquired him from the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of Week 7. Adams survived an injury scare during the second half as he was evaluated for a concussion. He ultimately passed the league's testing and was able to return to the field for the remainder of the game. Adams will be a solid WR2 in fantasy heading into Week 10's road game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Tyler Conklin Nov 1 4:20am CT
Tyler Conklin

New York Jets tight end Tyler Conklin lost three yards on his lone catch in a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. Conklin drew just two targets in the game as Aaron Rodgers directed 21 of his 32 pass attempts toward either Garrett Wilson or Davante Adams. That didn't leave much else for the rest of the Jets pass catchers, including Conklin who was outproduced by fellow tight ends Kenny Yeboah (one catch for 12 yards) and Jeremy Ruckert (one catch for four yards). Conklin will look to regroup heading into a Week 10 road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Riley Patterson Nov 1 4:20am CT
Riley Patterson

New York Jets kicker Riley Patterson did not attempt any field goals but hit all three of his extra points in a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. Making his debut for the Jets after they placed Greg Zuerlein (knee) on injured reserve earlier in the week, Patterson was perfect in the close win over the Texans. The veteran will presumably remain the Jets' kicker heading into a Week 10 road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Braelon Allen Nov 1 4:10am CT
Braelon Allen

New York Jets running back Braelon Allen carried the ball four times for nine yards and failed to catch his lone target in a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. Allen showed some life last week, turning 12 carries into 32 yards and a touchdown but he was right back to just a handful of carries behind Breece Hall in Thursday night's win. Allen has seen eight or fewer carries in five of his past six contests as the Jets have committed to getting the ball in Hall's hands of late. Allen remains a solid fantasy handcuff behind Hall but should not be in starting lineups in Week 10 when the Jets face off against the Arizona Cardinals on the road.

Garrett Wilson Nov 1 4:10am CT
Garrett Wilson

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson turned in a huge game in his team's 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. Wilson caught nine of his 10 targets for 90 yards and two touchdowns to help down the Texans in the close game. The veteran receiver's second touchdown was impressive as he made a leaping, one-handed grab in close coverage in the back of the end zone and just barely got both feet down in bounds for a 26-yard score. Wilson is hitting his stride after a quiet start to the season and has 60 catches for 663 yards and five touchdowns through nine games. He will be a low-end WR1 heading into a Week 10 road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

From RotoBaller

Aaron Rodgers Nov 1 4:00am CT
Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of his 32 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns in a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. That goes into the books as Rodgers' first game with more than two touchdown passes all season as he helped pull off the home win. Two of Rodgers' touchdown passes went to Garrett Wilson while the last one was a 37-yard strike to Davante Adams in the fourth quarter, the first touchdown connection for the two since Adams was acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of Week 7. Locked in as a QB2 in fantasy, Rodgers will take 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions into his Week 10 matchup, which will be on the road against the Arizona Cardinals.

Breece Hall Nov 1 4:00am CT
Breece Hall

New York Jets running back Breece Hall carried the ball 15 times for 74 yards and caught two of his four targets for 11 yards in a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans in Week 9's Thursday night game. Hall dominated the backfield work for the Jets in the close win as he out-touched Braelon Allen 16 to four in the contest. The veteran running back has now rushed for 502 yards while catching 35 passes for 327 yards and four all-purpose touchdowns through nine games this season. He will be an RB1 in fantasy heading into a Week 10 road matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

Jalen Tolbert Oct 31 11:50pm CT
Jalen Tolbert

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Tolbert has seen his production decline during the team's two-game losing streak (averaging 3.5 catches, 43.5 yards, zero touchdowns), but he has a solid opportunity to bounce back against a below-average Atlanta Falcons passing defense in Week 9. Coming off a three-catch, 44-yard performance in which he was massively outperformed by CeeDee Lamb, Tolbert could capitalize on an Atlanta defense that particularly struggles to defend perimeter receivers. Still, given how Tolbert has underperformed over the last few weeks, it will be tough to trust him as anything more than a WR3/FLEX play in Week 9. He ranks just outside the top 36 fantasy receivers at the moment.

From RotoBaller

CeeDee Lamb Oct 31 11:40pm CT
CeeDee Lamb

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb exploded as the overall WR1 in fantasy football last Sunday, and he'll look to pick up right where he left off during Week 9 versus the Atlanta Falcons. Lamb is coming off a spectacular game in which he caught 13 of 17 targets for 146 yards and two touchdowns, bumping him up to the overall WR4 this season. This week, he gets another favorable matchup in the form of the Falcons, who have been below-average against wide receivers. Atlanta has allowed the sixth-most touchdowns and the eighth-most receptions to opposing receivers in 2024, which bodes well for Lamb, who typically commands plenty of volume and scoring opportunities. He remains a must-start fantasy option this week, ranking as a high-end WR1.

From RotoBaller

Ezekiel Elliott Oct 31 11:30pm CT
Ezekiel Elliott

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott led the backfield in snaps last Sunday, but his role is expected to decrease with the return of Rico Dowdle ahead of Week 9 versus the Atlanta Falcons. Dowdle missed Week 8 due to an illness but has since been removed from the injury report and should have a full workload this Sunday. With that said, Dowdle's return to the lineup isn't necessarily a death spell for Elliott. Neither of the two has been particularly impressive this season, so it's possible that the Cowboys ride the hot hand at running back even if Dowdle earns the game's first snap. Dalvin Cook, who made his season debut last week, could also earn some touches. Both Dowdle and Elliott have lower floors and ceilings this week and should be treated as fringe top-36 running back options in fantasy football.

From RotoBaller

Rico Dowdle Oct 31 11:20pm CT
Rico Dowdle

Dallas Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle missed last Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers with an illness, but he's off the injury report and expected to play in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. Dowdle is a likely candidate to lead Dallas' backfield in production. After all, he led the Cowboys' running back room in snaps four times over the five-game span from Week 2 through 6. However, it's worth noting that he was out-snapped and out-produced by Ezekiel Elliott during their last game together in Week 6. Presumably, Dowdle will get first dibs on carrying the ball versus Atlanta, but Dallas won't shy away from riding the hot hand, especially if Elliott or Dalvin Cook play well in the opening quarter. Fantasy managers should treat Dowdle as a low-end RB3 with a low floor and low ceiling.

From RotoBaller

Dak Prescott Oct 31 11:10pm CT
Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been a frustrating fantasy football option in recent weeks, largely due to his tendency to turn over the football. Prescott has six interceptions and one lost fumble to just four touchdowns over his last three games, but those subpar outings came against talented defenses in the Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions, and San Francisco 49ers. This week, Prescott faces the Atlanta Falcons, who have been a little more forgiving to the quarterback position this season. So far, the Falcons have allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, as well as the seventh-most passing touchdowns and the third-most rushing yards. Turnovers are still a concern with Prescott going forward, but fantasy managers should expect his floor and ceiling to increase this week against Atlanta. He ranks just outside the top 12 fantasy quarterbacks at the moment.

From RotoBaller

C.J. Stroud Oct 31 11:00pm CT
C.J. Stroud

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud had a rough passing night in a 21-13 loss to the New York Jets, finishing a woeful 11-for-30 passing for 191 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. The second-year quarterback did rush for a career-high 59 yards, largely the result of the pocket breaking down and forcing him to scramble. The Jets' pass rush dominated a patchwork Houston offensive line for a whopping eight sacks, which made things difficult for Stroud. He and the Texans will look to get back on track when they play host to the Detroit Lions in Week 10.

From RotoBaller

Dalton Schultz Oct 31 10:50pm CT
Dalton Schultz

Houston Texans tight end Dalton Schultz finished Thursday night's 21-13 loss at the New York Jets with three catches for 21 yards. The Texans targeted the veteran tight end six times, which ranked second only to wide receiver Tank Dell, but completed just 11 of their 31 passing attempts on the night. Schultz now has failed to hit 30 yards receiving in six of nine games and still does not have a touchdown yet this season. He'll look for a long-awaited breakout in a solid matchup against Detroit in Week 10.

From RotoBaller

Tank Dell Oct 31 10:50pm CT
Tank Dell

For the first time this season, Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell reached a triple-digit receiving total with 126 yards on six catches in a 21-13 loss against the New York Jets. He was targeted a team-high nine times, but Houston completed only 11 passes for 191 yards as a team. The second-year receiver filled in nicely as the No. 1 option on the Texans, who were playing without Nico Collins (hamstring) and Stefon Diggs (knee). Collins is eligible to return next week, though Dell faces a nice matchup with or without him in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions.

From RotoBaller

Joe Mixon Oct 31 10:50pm CT
Joe Mixon

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon turned in another productive night with 106 yards rushing and a touchdown on 24 carries in a 21-13 loss on Thursday at the New York Jets. It was the fourth straight week in which the veteran running back surpassed 100 rushing yards and added a touchdown. Thursday was the former Cincinnati Bengal's first game of the season without a catch, but Houston completed only 11 passes and allowed eight sacks on a forgettable night. Mixon and the Texans will look to get the entire offense moving again in Week 10 against the Detroit Lions.
