Falcons prepare Michael Penix Jr., praise 'pro' Kirk Cousins for accepting QB2 role

Wed Dec 18 3:26pm ET
Field Level Media

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris came to the conclusion rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. gives Atlanta the best chance to beat the New York Giants on Sunday, a victory likely required to remain in the NFC playoff picture.

"I don't think anything is ever permanent in the National Football League, but right now Michael Penix is our quarterback," Morris said Wednesday.

The first-year coach made the move to Penix, the No. 8 pick in the 2024 draft, following an objective review of starter Kirk Cousins' play over the past five weeks. Cousins, signed to a four-year, $140 million contract in March, had one touchdown pass Monday to snap a four-game losing streak at Las Vegas. He leads the NFL with 18 turnovers, 16 interceptions and the Falcons (7-7) did their best to look beyond financial considerations and past season performance in an effort to win the moment.

"I brought Kirk in here with belief we could win a championship with Kirk. For whatever reason, lately it hasn't looked that way," Morris said.

"We've got to play better at the position."

Atlanta (7-7) trails the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-6) in the NFC South race. The Falcons play the Washington Commanders (9-5) on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 17 and playoff position could be on the line if the Falcons beat the Giants and the NFC-East leading Eagles beat the Commanders this week.

While coaches claimed the offense will remain the same, the process of upramping Penix shifted into fast-forward at the Flowery Branch, Ga., facility this week. Morris admitted there's limited chemistry between the rookie lefty and his top targets in the underachieving offense. One plus Morris called out was Penix bringing more athletic ability and mobility than Cousins.

Morris, who has repeated before and during the season he doesn't need to be the "smartest person in the building," said the QB decision was a collaboration that involved owner Arthur Blank and GM Terry Fontenot. He said he's not worried about Penix staring down the barrel with the playoffs still possible, crediting the 24-year-old with "maturity that goes beyond his years."

He also credited Cousins for taking the demotion as a professional.

"Any time you take a step down, and demotion, whatever the case may be it's not going to be met with great appreciation," Morris said. "But Kirk was a professional. He's a pro, he's a man, he's great human, great father, he's a great football player. He's done a lot of great things for us this year. He handled it with class. He's an absolute professional. I can't say enough good things about who the man is. Obviously it comes with some disappointment when you lose your job."

Morris said it's too early to discuss what the depth chart reset means for Cousins' future with the Falcons. His 2025 salary of $27.5 is fully guaranteed and Atlanta already paid Cousins a $50 million signing bonus and the majority of his $12.5 million base salary for 2024.

There's some professional historical precedent to the situation playing out in Atlanta for Morris.

During his head coaching run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009-2011, Morris turned to rookie first-round pick Josh Freeman midway through the 2009 season. Byron Leftwich began 2009 as the starter but was sidelined with an elbow injury.

Freeman won his first start with three TD passes, beating the Packers 38-28 to end an 11-game losing streak dating to 2008. The following season, in 2010, Freeman helped Morris flip the Bucs' 3-13 record to 10-6.

Player Notes
Patrick Mahomes Dec 18 3:20pm CT
Patrick Mahomes

According to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (ankle) was a full participant during Wednesday's practice. This was his second straight full practice of the week, putting him in a good position to suit up on Saturday to face the Houston Texans. Mahomes left Sunday's game early due to a high-ankle sprain but appears to have avoided a significant injury. Fantasy managers should pay close attention to his status during Thursday's practice, as it will likely clarify his availability for this weekend. Before exiting Sunday's game, Mahomes went 19-for-38 with 159 yards and two scores against the Browns. If Mahomes can suit up, fantasy managers should view him as a low-end QB1 facing the Houston Texans, who have allowed the 12th-most PPR points to opposing QBs.

Will Dissly Dec 18 3:20pm CT
Will Dissly

The Los Angeles Chargers have listed tight end Hayden Hurst (hip) as questionable and ruled tight end Will Dissly (shoulder) out for Thursday's game against the Denver Broncos. Hurst has been on the injured reserve since suffering a hip injury during Week 9, and seeing him log two straight full practices this week suggests he has a great chance to return on Thursday. Dissly was out last weekend with a shoulder injury and was unable to participate in any practices this week. With both tight ends battling injuries, Stone Smart led the way last weekend, tallying 50 yards on five receptions. Hurst should be expected to reclaim the top role if he can return on Thursday. Before his IR stint, Hurst only averaged a mere 14.8 yards per game, which could open the door for Smart to see an increased No.2 role. Given the uncertainty, Hurst is best to leave out of your lineup, while Smart should only be started if Hurst cannot play.

Kenneth Walker III Dec 18 3:10pm CT
Kenneth Walker III

According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, the Seattle Seahawks remain optimistic regarding the status of their top running back, Kenneth Walker III (calf). Walker has sat out the past two games due to a calf injury but could be nearing a return. Head coach Mike Macdonald noted that the team remains "optimistic" when asked if Walker would return to practice this week. Fantasy managers should pay close attention to his status throughout the week as he may need to participate in numerous practice sessions to have a chance to return on Sunday. While sidelined, Zach Charbonnet has taken full control of the backfield, tallying 188 rushing yards and three scores over the past two games. If Walker can return on Sunday, he should viewed as a solid RB2 despite facing a tough Minnesota defense that has allowed the second-fewest PPR points to opposing RBs.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Dec 18 3:00pm CT
Tyrone Tracy Jr.

New York Giants rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (ankle) was added to the Week 16 injury report on Wednesday after he put in a limited practice. It's a new injury for Tracy, so his status is worth watching the rest of the week, but if he's able to upgrade to a full practice on Thursday or Friday, he should be fine to play in a Week 16 tilt against the Atlanta Falcons on the road this weekend. The 25-year-old rookie has taken over lead-back duties from Devin Singletary for the majority of the season and has averaged 16.6 touches and 84.5 scrimmage yards in the last 10 games while also adding five rushing touchdowns. The fantasy upside certainly isn't very high given the Giants' pitiful quarterback situation -- Singletary is a threat to vulture TDs as well -- but for the volume alone, Tracy garners RB3/flex appeal if he's active for Week 16.

Malik Nabers Dec 18 2:50pm CT
Malik Nabers

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers (knee, foot) was listed as a limited practice participant on Wednesday while dealing with two injuries. Fellow wideout Wan'Dale Robinson (shoulder) was also limited in practice. Both players should be available to play in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons, but we'll monitor Nabers closely through the rest of the week. New York's quarterback situation has been atrocious in Nabers' first NFL season, which is why his 90-901-4 line in 12 games has been even more impressive. As long as he's active on Sunday, he's expected to be taking passes from Drew Lock again. It isn't ideal, but Nabers needs to be in all starting fantasy lineups if you still have something to play for. With Tommy DeVito and Tim Boyle seeing action in the Week 15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Nabers caught 10 of 14 targets for 82 yards and one touchdown.

Brian Burns Dec 18 2:40pm CT
Brian Burns

New York Giants outside linebacker Brian Burns (ankle) and inside linebacker Bobby Okereke (back) were not spotted in the portion of practice on Wednesday that was open to the media. Burn said his ankle got rolled up on "pretty bad" in the Week 15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but head coach Brian Daboll said Branch is "day-to-day." The 26-year-old's status is in question heading into a Week 16 tilt against the Atlanta Falcons, but he still has several days to get back on the practice field. The Giants would love to have one of their best defenders on the field for Falcons rookie first-round quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s first NFL start this Sunday. Burns, a two-time Pro Bowler, heads into Week 16 action with 58 tackles (34 solo), eight sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 15 QB hits, eight pass breakups and two forced fumbles in 14 starts in his first year in the Big Apple.

Geno Smith Dec 18 2:40pm CT
Geno Smith

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said that quarterback Geno Smith (knee) went through Wednesday's walkthrough and will participate in practice. It's unclear exactly how much Smith will actually practice, but even a limited session in the first practice of the week will put him in place to potentially play in Week 16 against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The veteran signal-caller tweaked his knee in the second half of Sunday night's loss to the Green Bay Packers and never returned. Tests on Smith's injured right knee came back positive for any structural damage, so barring a setback at practice this week, he appears to be on the right side of questionable to suit up this weekend. If for some reason Smith is ruled out, backup Sam Howell would make his first start of the year after looking overmatched in relief in Week 15.

Aaron Rodgers Dec 18 2:30pm CT
Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is getting healthier down the stretch, which has coincided with two of his best performances of the season the last two weeks against the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars. Rodgers has gone 43-for-69 the last two games with 628 passing yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. "He struggled with injury for a good part of the season, and, as he's starting to get healthier, you're starting to see Aaron Rodgers -- the real Aaron Rodgers," interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said. The future Hall of Famer even rushed for a team-high 45 yards against the Jags, the most by any player in his 40s since Doug Flutie in 2003. Rodgers battled ankle, hamstring and knee issues earlier this year but is as healthy as he's been all year right now. He'll have another decent matchup against the Rams in Week 16, but his recent strong play doesn't suddenly make him a QB1.

From RotoBaller

Tommy DeVito Dec 18 2:30pm CT
Tommy DeVito

New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito (concussion) was participating in drills at practice on Wednesday, so he's on track to clear the league's concussion protocol by Sunday in order to serve as the backup to starter Drew Lock in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons. DeVito made the first start after the team parted ways with Daniel Jones in Week 12 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but a right-forearm injury forced him into a backup role the following two weeks before he made his second start in place of the injured Lock in the Week 15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The 26-year-old then suffered a concussion on Sunday, but he appears to be making good progress and could be cleared for a backup role this weekend. The second-year signal-caller underwhelmed in his two starts before getting hurt and will be New York's backup as long as Lock can remain healthy through the final three weeks.

George Pickens Dec 18 2:20pm CT
George Pickens

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens (hamstring) is missing another practice on Wednesday but was able to do positional drills off to the side. Pickens has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury and is up in the air to return on a short week in a big divisional clash on Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens. A return to the practice field on Thursday, however, would be a good sign that Pickens is trending in the right direction. Despite missing the last two games due to injury, the 23-year-old would be an enticing fantasy play against the Ravens secondary if he's able to return to the field this weekend. The last time these two teams met on Nov. 17, Pickens had season-highs in catches (eight) and targets (12) for 89 yards. If he misses a third straight contest, Calvin Austin III and Van Jefferson would continue to see a boost snaps and targets in a great matchup.

Isaac Guerendo Dec 18 2:10pm CT
Isaac Guerendo

San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) is not taking part in Wednesday's practice due to a hamstring injury. The rookie out of Louisville did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday last week due to a foot injury, so it appears he picked up a new ailment in last Thursday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Guerendo handled 100% of the team's running back touches (20) last week, but another injury could result in Patrick Taylor Jr. entering the fantasy football radar. Fantasy managers counting on Guerendo should pick up Taylor as an insurance policy for the fantasy football playoffs. The Dolphins present a neutral matchup for fantasy running backs, so whoever gets the start could have RB1 upside in Kyle Shanahan's offense.

Kyle Shanahan Dec 18 2:10pm CT
Kyle Shanahan

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) may not be back for the rest of the season. Shanahan said that if Williams was healthy, he would be playing. However, with the 49ers looking unlikely to make the postseason, it's possible we won't see Williams over the final three games of the year. The 36-year-old is also dealing with the tragic death of his son this year, and his recovery from an ankle injury has taken a lot longer than anticipated. Williams has missed each of the team's last four games and missed yet another practice on Wednesday. As things currently stand, we'd be surprised if he was active in Week 16 versus the Miami Dolphins, which is more bad news for a Niners offense that failed to score a touchdown in last week's loss to the division-rival Los Angeles Rams.

Aidan O'Connell Dec 18 2:00pm CT
Aidan O'Connell

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell (knee) is practicing on Wednesday leading up to the Week 16 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This marks the first time he has practiced since he suffered a knee injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14. Head coach Antonio Pierce said O'Connell is trending toward being available for Sunday, so for now, he can be assumed as "probable" for Week 16. The 26-year-old has thrown for 899 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions in six games this year. Although he's heading into a matchup with the most fantasy-friendly defense for quarterbacks, he's not a recommended starting option in single-QB formats. If he can't play, Desmond Ridder is in line for another start.

From RotoBaller

Tony Pollard Dec 18 1:40pm CT
Tony Pollard

Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard (ankle) is not practicing on Wednesday ahead of the Week 16 matchups with the Indianapolis Colts. The veteran did not practice at all last week due to an ankle injury and still played against the Cincinnati Bengals, so fantasy managers will likely have to wait until Sunday to truly know if he's at risk of missing the AFC South matchup. However, Tennessee might opt to get Tyjae Spears more touches after he scored two touchdowns and posted 92 total yards last weekend. The Colts have allowed the eighth-most fantasy points per game to running backs, so this is a backfield worth monitoring for the rest of the week.

From RotoBaller

Mason Rudolph Dec 18 1:40pm CT
Mason Rudolph

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan confirmed Mason Rudolph will start at quarterback against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16, but he is not naming him the starter for the rest of the season and will take it week by week. The veteran and former Pittsburgh Steelers backup is set to take over for Will Levis after another turnover-heavy game from the 2023 second-round pick out of Kentucky. Although the Colts have allowed the 12th-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks, Rudolph is not worth rolling the dice on in the fantasy football playoffs. However, he has a small shot at upside for those counting on him in two-QB and Superflex leagues. If he posts a disastrous performance in Week 16, the Titans could go back to Levis in Week 17.

Tony Jones Jr. Dec 18 1:30pm CT
Tony Jones Jr.

The Arizona Cardinals signed veteran free-agent running back Tony Jones to the practice squad on Wednesday, according to NFL.com. The 27-year-old was on the team's preseason roster but was released just ahead of the regular season. With Emari Demercado (back) on Injured Reserve and Trey Benson (ankle) dealing with an ankle injury, the Cardinals running back rook behind James Conner is beginning to get thin. DeeJay Dallas would likely operate as the RB2 behind Conner against the Carolina Panthers this weekend if Benson can't play, but Jones could be elevated to the active roster and back him up. Jones has rushed 93 times for 274 yards and two touchdowns in 25 career games with the Saints, Seahawks, and Cardinals.

Brenton Strange Dec 18 1:20pm CT
Brenton Strange

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange (shoulder) is a limited participant in Wednesday's practice due to an AC joint sprain, according to head coach Doug Pederson. While the injury is not ideal, it's a good sign that he was not held out of practice to begin the week. The second-year tight end out of Penn State enjoyed the most productive game of his career last week against the New York Jets, catching 11 of his 12 targets for 73 yards. With Evan Engram (shoulder) out for the season, Strange will operate as the lead tight end in Jacksonville for the rest of the year. The 23-year-old has streamer appeal against the Las Vegas Raiders, who have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points per game to tight ends in 2024.

Grant DuBose Dec 18 1:20pm CT
Grant DuBose

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Grant DuBose (head) is expected to return to Miami on Wednesday after suffering a scary hit to the head in last week's loss to the Houston Texans. The 23-year-old has been hospitalized in Houston since Sunday, so this is great news. That said, the 2023 seventh-round pick has already been placed on Injured Reserve and will not play again this season. DuBose caught two passes for 11 yards in three games for Miami this year.

Roschon Johnson Dec 18 1:00pm CT
Roschon Johnson

Chicago Bears running back Roschon Johnson (concussion) was listed as a full participant for the team's walkthrough practice on Wednesday. Despite the estimated practice participation, it appears that Johnson has made notable progress through the league's concussion protocol and will have a chance to play in Week 16 against the division-rival Detroit Lions on Sunday after missing each of the last two games due to a concussion that he suffered in the Week 13 loss to the Lions. If the 23-year-old clears the concussion protocol later this week and is active this weekend, he won't be a realistic starting option in fantasy football as the clear backup behind D'Andre Swift in Chicago's lackluster offense. In his second NFL season in 2024, Johnson has seen just 48 rushing attempts for 139 yards (2.9 yards per carry) and has added 11 receptions for 88 yards in 11 games.

Sincere McCormick Dec 18 12:40pm CT
Sincere McCormick

The Las Vegas Raiders announced on Wednesday that they placed running back Sincere McCormick (ankle) on season-ending Injured Reserve. In a corresponding move, the team also signed running back Chris Collier to the 53-man active roster. The 24-year-old said himself on Tuesday in an Instagram post that he wasn't expecting to return in 2024, and now it's official. He was injured in Monday night's loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The former undrafted free agent go some run in recent weeks in Vegas' backfield with both Alexander Mattison and Zamir White injured and had 27 carries for 142 yards (5.26 yards per tote) while adding four catches for 12 yards in Weeks 13 and 14. McCormick averaged 4.7 yards per carry on 39 rushing attempts this year, but he'll be a free agent next spring and the Raiders could move on without him this offseason.
