Cowboys G Zack Martin to have season-ending ankle surgery

Thu Dec 5 1:02pm ET
Field Level Media

Seven-time All-Pro guard Zack Martin will have season-ending surgery on his right ankle, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy announced Thursday.

McCarthy acknowledged that he had a conversation with Martin this week, with the latter determining that surgery was the best avenue toward recovery.

"He's gonna be missed," McCarthy said. "We're not gonna replace Zack Martin, by any means. ... He brings so much to the team and the team culture. We all recognize what kind of player he's been here in Dallas, but the type of person he is -- people gravitate to him. His leadership, he'll definitely be missed in that area."

Martin, 34, is in the final year of his contract. He said in June that retirement was an option following this season.

A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Martin was named the Cowboys' 2024 nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award on Thursday.

Martin last played in Dallas' 34-10 loss to the Houston Texans on Nov. 18.

He has started 10 games this season and all 162 in which he has played since the Cowboys selected him with the 16th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Hot Plays, Fades and Sleepers: Week 14

Player Notes
Dallas Goedert Dec 5 1:40pm CT
Dallas Goedert

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) remains out of practice on Thursday after missing Wednesday's session with a knee injury. The 29-year-old had a productive day and caught a touchdown in Week 13 against the Baltimore Ravens but suffered an unfortunate ailment that is trending toward putting him out of action in Week 14. Goedert hasn't been a reliable fantasy option this season, but his potential absence raises the floor and ceiling of DeVonta Smith (hamstring) if he returns to the field in Week 14 after his two-game absence. That said, the Eagles can likely dominate the Carolina Panthers on the ground, so passing volume is unlikely to be there for Philly's pass-catchers.

Andy Reid Dec 5 1:30pm CT
Andy Reid

Former UCLA offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is leaving the program and is eyeing a return to the NFL, according to his agent Jason Fletcher. The 55-year-old spent five seasons as Andy Reid's offensive coordinator in Kansas City before one season running the Washington Commanders offense in 2023. Bieniemy's agent said it was his plan all along to be at UCLA for just one year in hopes of landing an NFL job after the 2024 campaign. It will be interesting to see if he is in consideration for a high-profile head coach or offensive coordinator job this offseason.

Isaac Guerendo Dec 5 1:20pm CT
Isaac Guerendo

San Francisco 49ers running back Isaac Guerendo is set to make his first career start on Sunday against the Chicago Bears. The Louisville product was expected to be the team's RB4 to start the year, but a preseason injury knocked Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) out for the year. Now, Christian McCaffrey (knee) and Jordan Mason (ankle) are on Injured Reserve. This leaves Guerendo in the RB1 role in Kyle Shanahan's offense, a valuable role for fantasy football. "I think he is ready to go," Shanahan said. "He only got better and he's gotten better throughout the year. So, I think he's ready for this." The 24-year-old has rushed 42 times for 246 yards and two touchdowns this season in his breather-back role, and he's in a potential smash spot against Chicago, a team that has allowed the 10th-most fantasy points per game to ball carriers. He is a virtual must-start back in Week 14, especially with six teams on a bye.

Dalton Kincaid Dec 5 1:00pm CT
Dalton Kincaid

Buffalo Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) was seen at Thursday's practice wearing a normal jersey. The Bills listed Kincaid as limited for the first practice of the week on Wednesday, but it appears he's upgraded to full on Thursday, which would give him a great shot at returning in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams after missing the last two games. The 25-year-old has been a disappointment as the TE1 in Buffalo in his second year in the NFL, but when healthy, he's still ahead of Dawson Knox in the TE pecking order for the Bills. If Kincaid returns this Sunday, he should at least be considered a low-end TE1 option for fantasy managers against a Rams defense that has been a top-10 matchup for opposing TEs in terms of half-PPR points per game. In his first 10 games this year, Kincaid caught 34 passes for 356 yards and two touchdowns.

Keon Coleman Dec 5 12:50pm CT
Keon Coleman

Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Keon Coleman (wrist) was wearing a red non-contact jersey in practice on Thursday, suggesting he was limited for the second straight day this week. Coleman hasn't played since Week 9 and is no lock to return to face the Los Angeles Rams on the road in Week 14, although the fact that he's practicing at all is a good sign. The 21-year-old rookie pass-catcher may need to upgrade to a full session on Friday in order to make his return this weekend. Before getting hurt, Coleman had a big role in Buffalo's passing attack, catching 22 of his 36 targets for 417 yards and three touchdowns in his first nine NFL games. The matchup is a good one versus the Rams, but Coleman is shaping up as a risky WR4/flex for fantasy managers in Week 14 with his status still up in the air. If he misses another contest, Mack Hollins and Curtis Samuel will battle for WR3 duties yet again in Buffalo.

Dak Prescott Dec 5 12:40pm CT
Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys offensive guard Zack Martin (ankle) will undergo season-ending surgery on his right ankle, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. It's more bad news for the Cowboys with five games remaining in the regular season. Martin, a seven-time All-Pro offensive lineman, injured his ankle in the Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans and hadn't played since. With the 34-year-old veteran out the rest of the way in what has been a lost season for Dallas, offensive lineman Brock Hoffman figures to take over as the team's starting right guard. Martin, the former sixth overall pick by Dallas back in 2014, will hit the free-agent market this offseason and could depart in free agency. His injury is just more bad news for an offense that is also without quarterback Dak Prescott (hamstring) for the rest of the season.

Cedric Tillman Dec 5 12:30pm CT
Cedric Tillman

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Cedric Tillman (concussion) missed another practice on Thursday and is trending toward missing a second straight game in Week 14 against the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Tillman suffered the concussion in the Week 12 upset win over the Steelers on Thursday night and was inactive for the Monday night loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 13. The 24-year-old still has two days to make progress through the league's concussion protocol, but the fact that he's still not practicing at all this late in the week isn't a good sign for his availability this weekend. With Tillman out on Monday against a good Denver defense, receivers Jerry Jeudy (over 200 yards) and Elijah Moore (over 100 yards) and tight end David Njoku (two touchdowns) all went off. An encore for the Browns offense will be tough against Pittsburgh, but all three will have more upside if Tillman is out again.

Breece Hall Dec 5 12:30pm CT
Breece Hall

New York Jets running back Breece Hall (knee) was not seen on Thursday at the portion of practice open to the media. Hall was also listed as a DNP in the first practice of the week on Wednesday, but interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich sounded optimistic that the team would have Hall available for the Week 14 game this Sunday against the division-rival Miami Dolphins. The 23-year-old played through a questionable tag in last week's loss to the Seattle Seahawks and played a season-low 62% of the offensive snaps, finishing with only 12 touches. A second straight DNP this week isn't what fantasy managers want to see, as it could mean that Hall will cede more backfield touches to rookie Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis for the second straight week. Hall will need to get back on the practice field on Friday, and even if he does, he could be questionable on the final injury report.

Ja'Tavion Sanders Dec 5 12:20pm CT
Ja'Tavion Sanders

Carolina Panthers rookie tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders (neck) is back on the practice field on Thursday and was not seen in the no-contact red jersey that he had been wearing since his scary neck injury in the Week 12 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Sanders hasn't played since that scary head-first landing but he put in a limited practice on Wednesday, and head coach Dave Canales said on Monday that he's hopeful that Sanders will be able to return in Week 14 to face the Philadelphia Eagles. The fourth-rounder was getting more involved in the offense before his injury a few weeks ago and could be worth looking at as a TE2 streamer in deeper fantasy leagues whenever he returns. In Sanders' absence in last week's overtime loss to the division-rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tommy Tremble had five catches on eight targets for a season-high 77 yards.

CeeDee Lamb Dec 5 12:00pm CT
CeeDee Lamb

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said that wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (shoulder) will be limited in practice on Thursday because his shoulder is still bothering him. Lamb was held out of the team's unofficial walkthrough practice on Wednesday but will upgrade to limited for the first official practice of the week as the Cowboys prepare to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night in Week 14. The 25-year-old aggravated his shoulder injury in the Thanksgiving Day win over the division-rival New York Giants and finished with a disappointing 39 yards on only two receptions. It doesn't seem like Lamb is in much danger of missing Monday night's contest, but fantasy managers will want to keep a close eye on his status over the next two days. If Lamb is available in Week 14, he'll be a must-start against one of the worst defenses in the league.

Bucky Irving Dec 5 11:30am CT
Bucky Irving

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Bucky Irving (back, hip) was able to return to practice on Thursday after he was listed as a DNP on Wednesday. Irving will most likely be listed as limited for Thursday's session, but it at least puts him on track to be available this weekend for an excellent matchup against the two-win Las Vegas Raiders. Even though Rachaad White and to a lesser extent, Sean Tucker, remain involved in Tampa's backfield, Irving has been the most productive ball-carrier for the Bucs in 2024 and should be viewed as an RB1 this weekend if he's available to suit up. The 22-year-old fourth-rounder leads the team in rushing yards (732), carries (133) and rushing touchdowns (six) and is coming off his best performance of the year -- 25 carries for 152 yards and a score -- in the Week 13 overtime win over the Panthers. Irving has scored in three straight games on the ground.

Mike Evans Dec 5 11:20am CT
Mike Evans

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans (calf, hamstring) was not seen at the portion of practice open to the media on Thursday. If Evans ends up being an official DNP on Thursday, it will be his second straight missed practice of the week. The future Hall of Fame pass-catcher missed Weeks 8-10 due to a right-hamstring injury but has played the last two games for the Bucs, catching 13 of his 18 targets for 186 yards and a touchdown. In addition to his hamstring injury, he's now dealing with a calf injury that has put his availability for this Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders in question. Evans is a no-doubt, must-start fantasy wideout when he's active, but fantasy managers may need to prepare a backup plan in place he's unavailable in Week 14. If Evans cannot go, Sterling Shepard would likely be the WR1, with tight end Cade Otton most likely being the most targeted.

Brevin Jordan Dec 5 11:10am CT
Brevin Jordan

The Houston Texans signed tight end Brevin Jordan (knee) to an undisclosed one-year contract extension on Thursday morning, according to a source. Jordan was poised for a breakout season in 2024 but tore his ACL in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. With the extension in place, the Texans will look forward to having him back in 2025. The 24-year-old served as mostly a lead blocker in the first two games of the season behind pass-catching tight end Dalton Schultz, catching only two of his three targets for seven yards. His injury vaulted Cade Stover into a bigger role behind Schultz this year, but the rookie only has 14 receptions for 132 yards and one touchdown in 13 games played. Jordan has never had more than 20 catches, 219 receiving yards or three touchdowns in any of his four NFL seasons and won't be on the fantasy map in 2025 coming off his serious knee injury.

Logan Wilson Dec 5 11:10am CT
Logan Wilson

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson (knee) underwent a surgical cleanup on his knee on Thursday morning and is expected to miss the rest of the regular season, according to sources. An already bad Bengals defense will lose one of their best playmakers in the middle of the field for the final games of the season. The 28-year-old's recovery timetable could give him a shot at returning for the postseason, but Cincy's playoff chances are pretty bleak heading into Week 14 as they sit with a 4-8 record. Wilson was inactive for the Week 13 loss to the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers. He will finish his 2024 campaign, his fifth in the NFL with the Bengals, with 104 tackles (55 solo), two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 11 games. It was Wilson's first season without an interception, but he also went over 100 total tackles for the fourth straight year.

Diontae Johnson Dec 5 12:13am CT
Diontae Johnson

Dynasty | Ravens wide receiver Diontae Johnson has been suspended one game for conduct detrimental to the team. Dynasty Analysis: Ouch. It seems Johnson was asked to enter this week's game and politely declined. Clearly unhappy with his role after being traded from Carolina, Johnson is seemingly waving the white flag on his season and moving forward. He has just one catch on five targets in four games played after being acquired by Baltimore as this mid-season acquistiion has clearly gone haywire. At this point, Johnson is likely to serve his suspension, then the rest of the year on the Baltimore bench. His dynasty value is crumbling, but at least he'll be a free agent this off-season and the chances of him re-signing with the Ravens are near zero.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Trevor Lawrence Dec 5 12:13am CT
Trevor Lawrence

Dynasty | The Jaguars have placed quarterback Trevor Lawrence on IR. Dynasty Analysis: Lawrence suffered a concussion on an unnecessary hit last week in the game against Houston and it looks like his season is over. He'll also reportedly need surgery to repair the damage to his AC joint, an injury that happened earlier in the season. It's unfair to say Lawrence is breaking down, but it is fair to say his future is murky. The "next big thing" at quarterback now has just 69 touchdowns and 46 interceptions through his 60 career games and the injuries are starting to pile on. Considering he'll likely again have a new Head Coach and offense, Lawrence is looking a lot more like a QB2 than a QB1 in dynasty leagues at this point and his dynasty value will likely slide this off-season.

Jake Ferguson Dec 4 11:50pm CT
Jake Ferguson

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson (concussion) is making progress from his head injury and took part in the team's unofficial walkthrough practice on Wednesday as they prepare for their Monday night battle against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14. The Cowboys won't release their first official injury report for the week until Thursday, but it's a good sign that the 25-year-old is back on the field in any capacity after missing the last two games due to a concussion he suffered in the Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans. He'll need to completely pass through the league's concussion protocol and be cleared by an independent neurologist in order to play on Monday night, though, so Ferguson's Week 14 status remains up in the air, which makes life difficult for his fantasy managers. With Ferguson out the last two games, Luke Schoonmaker has stepped up with eight catches for 88 yards and a score on 10 targets.

Amon-Ra St. Brown Dec 4 9:53pm CT
Amon-Ra St. Brown

Detroit Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown's 76 receptions rank fourth in the NFL, and he has yet to drop a pass this season.

Fantasy Spin: St. Brown is averaging a somewhat pedestrian 10.8 yards per reception, but he is tied for second in the league with nine touchdown catches. While more yardage would be nice, St. Brown still offers a WR2 floor with WR1 upside, especially in PPR formats.

Saquon Barkley Dec 4 9:33pm CT
Saquon Barkley

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley leads the NFL with 6.1 yards per carry, and his 32 carries of 10 or more yards also rank first in the league.
