Montgomery just keeps producing

Last week is going to be a hard one to top in fantasy land with some of the biggest fantasy games of the season. We can dream, though, right? Anything can happen any given week. And with no teams on a bye, it would be a surprise if we didn’t have at least one or two game-changing fantasy performances. Let’s hope they come on your teams this week.

Now for my random thoughts for the week. . . . .

You have to feel for Panthers rookie running back Jonathan Brooks, who suffered a torn ACL in the same knee he hurt last year. Just awful. But with that said, the stock of Chuba Hubbard is rising in a hurry. This offense is looking better each week and Hubbard will be manning the backfield likely all of next season as well. I think he can improve on this season, a season he is 11th overall in fantasy running back scoring right now. Things are looking up for Hubbard owners.

Jalen Hurts is struggling throwing the ball but remains fourth overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. He has just one 300-yard game this year and three games with 240-plus passing yards. His passing numbers are way down and there seems to be a rift with him and A.J. Brown. But even with that all said, he gets so many rushing touchdowns that his fantasy value remains sky high. If he can get those passing numbers going again, watch out.

I’m not sure where Sam Darnold lands next year but he will be starting and deserves that chance once again. He is having a great season in Minnesota. I just think his fantasy value will depend on his landing spot. He is in a great situation with some great weapons around him in Minnesota and a top offensive mind calling plays for him. Hopefully, he can keep it going next year but I am a little skeptical until I see where he lands.

Trey McBride is still third overall in fantasy tight end scoring and is yet to find the end zone. Just crazy. I mean if he has five touchdowns, he is leading all fantasy tight ends in scoring. His numbers are off the charts across the board except when it comes to touchdowns. I think that is a fluke as much as anything. Don’t look too much into it. He will get it going in the end zone. This guy is the real deal.

It is my favorite thing to say at this time of the fantasy season. Don’t get too cute. There are no more byes. You should have your top players available and ready to make a deep playoff run for you. Don’t overthink things. Go with the guys that got you there. Playing a marginal player with a favorable matchup over a stud with a bad matchup can be a recipe for disaster. I’m going with the proven players I trust in these crucial games. Don’t get too cute!

So I’m not as convinced as I was with the other three 49ers backs that Patrick Taylor will come in and produce big. I think they might platoon things a little more as I don’t see Taylor as a true three-down back. The other three fit the bill better in my opinion. I’m good adding him and using him but just temper your expectations a little. Taylor has been around a while and produced sporadically with his chances. He might not be near as good as Isaac Guerendo or Jordan Mason.

I wonder what will happen with Kenneth Walker going forward. He has a world of talent and produced some big games throughout his career, but Zach Charbonnet might just be the better fit for that offense. I would not be surprised if the Seahawks move on from Walker after the season, leaving Charbonnet the clear lead back. And if that happens, he can be an elite No. 1 fantasy back. It will be interesting to see what happens this offseason in Seattle.

News and Notes: The Patriots released receiver K.J. Osborn on Tuesday. Osborn got little playing time and will look to catch on with a new team before the season is over. . . . .The Panthers signed receiver Velus Jones Jr. to the active roster from the Jaguars practice squad on Tuesday. Carolina adds some more depth to receiver and running back with the addition of Jones. . . . .Cleveland released receiver Kadarius Toney on Tuesday. Toney might be about done in the NFL after this latest stint.

HOT PLAYS

Bo Nix, QB, Broncos. Nix threw for 294 yards his last time out and has 20-plus fantasy points four of six games. Heh as multiple touchdowns three of four games. Nix just keeps getting it done every week and making progress throughout the season. He is a legit low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback and deserves some starts this week against the Colts. Indianapolis allows the 10th most fantasy points to quarterbacks and ranks 26th overall against the pass.

David Montgomery, RB, Lions. Montgomery doesn’t get quite the fantasy love as teammate Jahmyr Gibbs but he is a top-10 fantasy back. The numbers don’t lie. He gets a ton of work and produces on a weekly basis. He has fewer than 12 fantasy points just one game all season. Montgomery has 15-plus fantasy points four straight games. He should have another big showing this week against the Bills. Buffalo is ninth overall against the pass compared to 19th against the run. The Bills allow the third most fantasy points to running backs. Look for the Lions to run all over the Bills in this matchup.

Aaron Jones, RB, Vikings. Jones has a few fumbling issues of late but is still producing well for his fantasy owners. He has fewer than double-digit fantasy points just two times all year. Jones has touchdowns three straight games. He has 16-plus points two of three games. Jones has two 100-yard rushing games this season and one came against his opponent this week, the Bears. Chicago is just 26th overall against the run, allowing 134.8-rushing yards per game. Jones is a must start in this one.

Khalil Shakir, WR, Bills. Shakir continues to be the most steady Bills receiver. He had his second 100-yard game of the season last week, topping 20 fantasy points for the first time. Shakir has at least seven targets seven straight games. His numbers aren’t eye popping but super consistent. It is all fantasy owners can ask. Look for another good game this week against the Lions, a team that allows the fourth most fantasy points to receivers.

Jauan Jennings, WR, 49ers. With Brandon Aiyuk done for the season, Jennings is acting as the No. 1 receiver for the 49ers and doing very well in that role. He had multiple touchdowns last week and 16-plus fantasy points three of five games. His ceiling is super high in this offense, making him about a must start for fantasy teams on a weekly basis. He could have another one of those big games this week against the Rams, a team that just allowed 342-passing yards to the Bills last week.

COLD PLAYS

Jared Goff, QB, Lions. Goff had a great game last week, throwing three touchdown passes. He was nearly flawless in the Lions big win over the Packers. Goff hasn’t been off the charts for his fantasy owners of late, though. He has fewer than 20 fantasy points five of seven games. The Lions run-heavy approach can limit Goff at times. And we wouldn’t be surprised if that is the case this week against the Bills. Buffalo struggles against the run but is very good against the pass. The Bills allow the fourth fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks.

Najee Harris, RB, Steelers. Harris has taken a step forward this year for fantasy teams, posting much more consistent numbers. He has scored touchdowns two straight games and has scores five of eight games. But his rushing numbers haven’t been off the charts, though. He has fewer than 65-rushing yards four of five games. He could have a ho-hum showing this week against the Eagles. Philadelphia allows the fifth fewest fantasy points to running backs and has allowed fewer than 100-rushing yards six of eight games.

D’Andre Swift, RB, Bears. Swift is picking a bad time to produce his worst numbers of the fantasy season. He has fewer than double-digit fantasy points three straight and four of five games. Swift has less than 40-rushing yards three straight games. The Bears offense is struggling, including Swift. He might struggle again this week against the Vikings, a team that allows the fourth fewest fantasy points to running backs. In Week 12 against the Vikings, Swift ran 13 times for just 30 yards.

Tee Higgins, WR, Bengals. Higgins had his worst game of the fantasy season last week, catching two passes for 23 yards on five targets. He had scores three straight games before this down showing. The big concern was Higgins was targeted just five times in the game, which was a season low. We wouldn’t be surprised if Higgins struggles some again this week against a very good Titans pass defense. Tennessee is first overall against the pass, allowing just 175.5-passing yards per game.

DK Metcalf, WR, Seahawks. Metcalf has not been his usual fantasy self in recent weeks. He has fewer than 70 yards three straight games. He has just four receptions each of those four games. Metcalf has not hit the 100-yard mark since Week 4 of the fantasy season, watching Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerge as the go-to target in the Seahawks passing game. Metcalf could struggle again this week against the Packers, a team that is ninth overall against the pass.

SLEEPERS

Aaron Rodgers, QB, Jets. Rodgers is starting to show some signs of life for fantasy teams. He had his first 300-yard game of the season last week and has multiple touchdowns two of three games. The Jets are struggling to run the ball, so Rodgers is airing it out more often. The has 35-plus pass attempts three of four games. Rodgers can keep it up this week against the Jaguars, a team allows the second most fantasy points to quarterbacks.

Ray-Ray McCloud, WR, Falcons. McCloud just keeps getting it done. He had season highs for the second straight game, catching eight passes for 98 yards on 11 targets last week. He has 90-plus yards two straight games. He has double-digit fantasy points three straight and four of five games. He has good spot start value for fantasy teams right now, especially this week against the Raiders. Las Vegas has allowed 240-plus passing yards six straight games.

Wan’Dale Robinson, WR, Giants. Robinson had just four catches for 38 yards last week but was targeted 11 times in the game. It was the first time reaching double-digit targets since Week 6. This is a great sign for Robinson, especially this week against the Ravens. You could see the Ravens getting up big, leading the Giants to throw often. This could lead to some big numbers for Robinson against a team that allows the third most fantasy points to receivers.

Noah Gray, TE, Chiefs. Gray might not be the starter for the Chiefs, but he is producing like one. He has 18-plus fantasy points two of four games. Gray has four receptions four straight games. He is getting a lot more consistent work than earlier this season. His fantasy value is on the move. Look for another positive game for him this week against the Browns, a team that allows the ninth most fantasy points to tight ends.

Antonio Gibson, RB, Patriots. Patriots starter Rhamondre Stevenson has struggled some in recent weeks, so Gibson could be getting some more chances. And Gibson has looked good in recent weeks with his work, rushing seven times for 62 yards and a touchdown his last time out. He has 106 total yards on just 14 touches his last two games. Gibson has been very efficient with his chances. Maybe he gets more work this week against the Cardinals, a team that allows the seventh most fantasy points to running backs.

High/Low Scoring Games

Each week we will take a look at some of the high and low-scoring games for the coming week. In high-scoring affairs, get your marginal players on those teams in your lineup to take advantage of the possible points barrage. And in the low-scoring games, keep those marginal players on the bench and make sure to have your defenses involved in those contests.

High Scoring Games: Rams/49ers, Dolphins/Texans, Chiefs/Browns, Bills/Lions, Packers/Seahawks.

Low Scoring Games: Jets/Jaguars.

Tyler Bass Jul 28 8:30pm ET
Tyler Bass

Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass (pelvis) is dealing with a pelvis injury that kept him sidelined at training camp practice on Monday, according to Bills beat writer Maddy Glab. It doesn't appear to be a serious injury for Bass, so he should be back in action at camp in a couple of days. The 28-year-old has been good but not great for fantasy purposes in his five seasons as the Bills' kicker. Bass went 24-for-29 on field-goal tries and 59-for-64 on his extra points in 2024 in 17 regular-season games. He has made anywhere from 24 to 28 field goals in all five of his seasons in Buffalo. Bass is in one of the best offenses in the league, but the Bills have been so efficient at punching it into the end zone that his fantasy ceiling has remained low. Still, if you wait at the position in fantasy drafts, you could do much worse than Bass as a low-end starting option in 12-team leagues.

David Walker Jul 28 8:10pm ET
David Walker

Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie fourth-round edge rusher David Walker (knee) will miss his entire first year in the NFL after suffering a torn ACL in training camp practice on Friday, according to head coach Todd Bowles. "He was making a big impact early," Bowles said. "Obviously, we were counting on him doing a lot of things, but other guys are going to have to step up. I told him he has to look at this like a redshirt year. It's unfortunate. It didn't look like it was too much on film, but it ended up being that." Walker was expected to serve in a depth role in his first year in the league behind starting outside linebackers Haason Reddick and Yaya Diaby. The 25-year-old will now look to begin a long and grueling rehab and hopefully be ready for training camp next summer.

Sauce Gardner Jul 28 6:40pm ET
Sauce Gardner

New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner only covered an opponent's top receiver a handful of times each season in the team' previous zone-based defensive scheme, although he's quietly yearned for more of those chances. According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Gardner said he could get many more chances to cover a WR1 in the new defensive scheme, which is expected to rely heavily on man-to-man coverage. In addition to trying to lock down another star wideout more, Gardner might get more blitzing opportunities under new defensive-minded head coach Aaron Glenn. Opposing QBs don't often target Gardner's side of the field, but that could change if he's guarding more top wideouts, which in turn could lead to more pass-breakup and interception opportunities for the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. Tackling hasn't really been his forte, but Gardner's coverage skills are elite.

Darren Waller Jul 28 6:20pm ET
Darren Waller

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said on Monday that tight end Darren Waller is in "tremendous shape," but the team isn't allowing that to "trick us into thinking he's in football shape." Waller was "very active" with tight ends coach Jon Embree on Monday, according to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques. The 32-year-old isn't dealing with any type of injury, but the Dolphins placed him on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list to start training camp after he retired and sat out all of the 2024 campaign. Waller is back now and should serve as the team's top pass-catching TE after they traded Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers. There's no guarantee that he'll be anything near the type of receiver he was in his peak seasons with the Raiders, but given the shallow fantasy position of TE, Waller is at least worthy of a TE2 dart throw.

Christian Gonzalez Jul 28 6:20pm ET
Christian Gonzalez

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez (leg) left training camp practice on Monday early under his own power after covering wide receiver Stefon Diggs on a crossing route during 11-on-11 drills, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN. Reiss noted that Gonzalez appeared to have suffered some sort of leg injury. It's unclear exactly what the 23-year-old is dealing with, but the fact that he was able to walk off under his own power is hopefully a sign that it's nothing serious. Losing the former first-round defensive back for an extended period of time would be really bad news for New England's secondary. Gonzalez was a key defender for the Pats in 2025 in his second NFL season, and he finished with 59 tackles (50 solo), two interceptions, 11 pass breakups and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown in 16 starts.

Alec Pierce Jul 28 6:10pm ET
Alec Pierce

Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen said that wide receiver Alec Pierce (foot) missed Monday's training camp practice due to a blister on his foot. Pierce is considered day-to-day with the minor injury and could return to the field in the next couple of days. The 25-year-old heads into his fourth NFL season in 2025 ranked as RotoBaller's No. 68 fantasy wideout after he had 37 receptions on 69 targets for a career-high 824 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games (13 starts). Pierce led the league with 22.3 yards per catch as a downfield threat for quarterbacks Anthony Richardson Sr. and Joe Flacco. It remains to be seen if he can develop into something other than just a deep threat, but with the Colts having a QB competition between Richardson and Daniel Jones, most fantasy managers aren't trying to find out.

Jaydon Blue Jul 28 6:00pm ET
Jaydon Blue

Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue has impressed the coaching staff early in training camp despite the fact that veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders have been given the majority of snaps with the first-team offense, writes K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire. Blue, who was taken in the fifth round of this year's draft, was impressive in pads over the weekend seems to have dispelled a recent report that a former coach labeled the 21-year-old as "borderline lazy." The 5-foot-9, 196-pounder doesn't really have the size to be a bell-cow back between the tackles, but there is room for growth in a Dallas backfield that could be a full on committee approach in 2025. Blue is still going to need to prove himself, but he could end up seeing decent playing time as a pass-catching option out of the backfield for Dallas.

Khalil Shakir Jul 28 5:40pm ET
Khalil Shakir

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir is looking to take the next step in 2025 after bursting onto the scene in 2024 with 76 catches, 821 receiving yards and four touchdowns during the regular season. Bills beat writer Maddy Glab says that this year, Shakir is looking to be quicker and to find new ways to separate from defensive backs. "First step quickness, always trying to improve on that," Shakir said of what he worked on this offseason. "Speed, just withholding speed for a certain amount of time and that quick burst, as well as separation. Just finding new ways and new releases to get open against man coverage." The 25-year-old had a high target share and plenty of yards after the catch, but the Bills spread the ball around too much to make him anything more than a WR3/flex. It's likely to continue, and his lack of red-zone usage makes Shakir a low-ceiling WR4/flex target.

From RotoBaller

Alex Singleton Jul 28 5:20pm ET
Alex Singleton

Denver Broncos inside linebacker Alex Singleton (thumb) suffered a broken thumb in training camp practice on Monday but is expected to miss only seven to eight days before he can put a club on his hand and return to the field, a source told Mike Klis of 9 News. Singleton will not need to miss any time to begin the 2025 regular season, which is great news for the Broncos defense. The 31-year-old had four straight seasons of 100-plus combined tackles before tearing his ACL in 2024 and being limited to only three games. He had a career-best 177 tackles (106 solo), two sacks, six tackles for loss, six QB hits and two fumble recoveries in 17 games played in 2023. Singleton has been fantasy relevant as a tackling machine, but outside of that there isn't much fantasy upside, and he could lose a step after coming back from a major knee injury.

From RotoBaller

Drew Sanders Jul 28 5:20pm ET
Drew Sanders

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said that linebacker Drew Sanders (foot) is dealing with a ligament injury in his foot and will be out "north of four to six weeks." However, the Broncos are relieved it's not a tendon injury, which means the 23-year-old could return to the team before the start of the regular season on Sept. 7 against the Tennessee Titans. Sanders suffered the foot injury in training camp practice on Saturday. Fellow linebacker Alex Singleton broke his thumb in practice on Monday and is going to miss at least a week as well, so the Broncos are running a little thin at the linebacker spot in camp. The good news is neither Sanders nor Singleton are expected to miss the start of the regular season. The 24-year-old Sanders has played in 21 games (four starts) since debuting in 2023 and has 32 tackles (17 solo) and a sack.

From RotoBaller

J.K. Dobbins Jul 28 5:10pm ET
J.K. Dobbins

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said that running back J.K. Dobbins' transition to the offense has been "swift." It appears that the Broncos' decision to sign Dobbins in early June so that he could enter the offseason break with the playbook was a good move. Dobbins is going to share the backfield with rookie second-rounder RJ Harvey in his first year in Denver, but so far in training camp, the 26-year-old former Raven has seen most of the work with the first-team offense. Harvey could easily take over the early-down role for the Broncos sooner than later in 2025, but if Dobbins can stay healthy, he should be in play in PPR fantasy leagues as an RB3/flex option. Dobbins played in just nine games from 2021-23 due to injuries and also missed four games in 2024 with the Chargers due to an MCL sprain, so the lengthy injury history is certainly concerning.

Gunner Olszewski Jul 28 5:00pm ET
Gunner Olszewski

The New York Giants have agreed to a contract with wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. Raanan notes that the move comes after the Giants lost wide receiver and core special-teamer Bryce Ford-Wheaton (Achilles) for the season. Olszewski last appeared in an NFL game for the Giants in 2023 and has also played for the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. He's most known for his work on special teams as a kick and punt returner. In 65 career games, Olszewski has recorded just 15 catches for 180 yards and one touchdown. He'll have a chance to earn a role in New York as a returner, but it's unlikely that he factors in the passing game for the Giants.

Jerome Ford Jul 28 4:50pm ET
Jerome Ford

Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford (undisclosed) returned to practice in a limited capacity on Monday, according to ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. Oyefusi reports that Ford completed individual drills and then worked with a trainer on a separate field during the team portions of Cleveland's practice. The team never disclosed what caused Ford to miss time, but it appears as though he's close to returning to full strength. The fourth-year back is competing with rookies Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson for touches, but Judkins remains away from the team after being arrested on domestic violence charges. In 14 games last season, Ford recorded 790 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. Particularly if Judkins misses significant time, Ford has a chance to seize the RB1 role in Cleveland and put up the best numbers of his career.

From RotoBaller

Treylon Burks Jul 28 4:40pm ET
Treylon Burks

The Tennessee Titans have waived/injured wide receiver Treylon Burks (collarbone), according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Burks fractured his collarbone over the weekend and appears likely to miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season. A former first-round selection by Tennessee back in 2022, Burks never found his footing with the organization. Injuries limited him to just 27 games in three seasons, and he recorded 92 catches for 699 yards and one touchdown in those appearances. Tennessee has veterans Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett atop their wide receiver depth chart, with rookies Chimere Dike and Elic Ayomanor competing with Van Jefferson for the WR3 job. Burks may have to wait until late this season or even 2026 for a chance to salvage his career, and it seems unlikely that he'll get that opportunity in Tennessee.

Noah Fant Jul 28 4:31pm ET
Noah Fant

Dynasty | The Seahawks have released tight end Noah Fant. Dynasty Analysis: The Seahawks needed to cut some payroll and Fant ends up on the wrong end of it as a result. Fant just never became a difference maker in the Emerald City, despite being one of the biggest parts of the Russell Wilson trade years ago. In the end, his three seasons in Seattle yielded a total of fewer than 1,500 yards and only five touchdowns in 48 total games. Fant looks like a bit of a roster clogger at this point, but could be back on the radar should be end up in a favorable spot over the next week or so.

Desmond Ridder Jul 28 4:31pm ET
Desmond Ridder

Dynasty | The Bengals have signed quarterback Desmond Ridder. Dynasty Analysis: The former University of Cincinnati quarterback returns home with the hopes of carving out a role as the backup to Joe Burrow. Once thought of as the potential future in Atlanta, Ridder has shown he's a decent player, but simply not one with the potential of being a true starter in the NFL. At this point, he belongs on deep rosters in 2QB/Superflex leagues, but it's hard to justify a spot for him in a conventional dynasty league.

Justin Fields Jul 28 4:31pm ET
Justin Fields

Dynasty | Jets quarterback Justin Fields suffered a dislocated toe in practice today. Dynasty Analysis: Fields was carted off the field and things looked bleak this morning. However, there were no fractures in his foot and it turns out he's going to be considered "day=to-day" moving forward. This would have been catastrophic for the Jets as Fields is currently backed up by Tyrod Taylor and is the centerpiece of their offense. Fields should be back shortly and dynasty managers can breathe a sigh of relief. He remains an upside QB1 in dynasty leagues, but one with a lot of risk involved.

Rashod Bateman Jul 28 4:30pm ET
Rashod Bateman

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman (illness) was sent home on Monday due to an illness, according to Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. There's no reason to think this will be a long-term absence for Bateman, but he could conceivably miss the next few days of practice as well. The 25-year-old is coming off the best season of his career in 2024 when he recorded 45 catches for 756 yards and nine touchdowns in 17 games. Baltimore added some talent to the wide receiver room with the offseason addition of DeAndre Hopkins, but Bateman still profiles as an important piece of the team's offense. The Ravens' low-volume passing offense limits Bateman's fantasy upside, but he has some boom/bust appeal as a flex option in deep leagues due to his ability to make plays down the field.

Terry McLaurin Jul 28 4:20pm ET
Terry McLaurin

The difference between what the Washington Commanders are willing to offer and what wide receiver Terry McLaurin (ankle) is asking for in contract negotiations is "vast," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. McLaurin ended his holdout and reported to Commanders' training camp on Sunday, but he was immediately placed on the active/physically unable to perform list, so this could be a hold-in situation. McLaurin will turn 30 in September and has been remarkably durable throughout his career, playing in 17 games in each of the last five seasons. He caught 82 passes for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns in 2024, his first season playing with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. McLaurin profiles as a high-end WR2 in fantasy as long as he's ready to go for the regular season, but it appears as though his return to the practice field is not particularly close.

Najee Harris Jul 28 4:20pm ET
Najee Harris

Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris (eye) is on the mend from a fireworks-related eye injury that has landed him on the non-football injury list to start training camp. However, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz says there's "no rush" to get Harris back on the field at this point in the summer. Harris signed a one-year deal with the Chargers this past offseason after spending the first four years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's never missed a game in his career, and he rushed for over 4,300 yards and 28 touchdowns in Pittsburgh. The Chargers used a first-round pick on running back Omarion Hampton in the 2025 draft, and Hampton and Harris project to share touches in the team's backfield this season. However, with each day Harris misses, Hampton could be getting closer and closer to seizing the lead role.
